I've been waiting years for this.Fats Domino rock'n' rolls through twelve popular christmas songs.Sounds like his regular band, no strings or choirs, just good old down home New Orleans R&B Mardi Gras Christmas, all rock and rolled into one. Magic.
OK so a lot of people love this cd and as Christmas music goes this is nice and relaxed.
I have to say though as a fan of the Fat Man and all things New Orleans I feel a little let down. The main issue I have is that it sounds to me like Fats at home on a Casio keyboard after a few festive drinks kicking it which is fun but the horns and rhythm section seem to have been added at a later date.
This leaves a slightly unsatisfactory feel to the whole recording and I would have preferred a little more spark like you will find with some of his more recent live recordings with basically the same band which have a fantastic energy to them. On some of these tracks he seems to be about to nod of after Christmas dinner.
As I say it has a lovely laid back feel to it but at times it is almost comatose.
If anyone from New Orleans was going to cut a Christmas album it would be Fats Domino and finally he did it Unfortunately Huey Piano Smith beat him to it The Fat Man is still in the same turf with no corporates trying to turn his music into AOR.Some things are just too sacred
