The Christmas Present., 8 Oct 2006
This review is from: The Christmas Present (Paperback)
I think the book is really good. It's better than `Narnia'!I am the same age as Neal, the main character in the book. Definitely buy this book.
My favourite part is the battle scene. Santa and his 5 reindeer, Norman the Navigator,Forward Frankie, Rudolf the Rednose, Simon the Spare and Reversing Rory and Neal, and all the nature help to defeat Misery and his soldiers to restore happiness in ENDland. It would make a great film. I really hope that Eamonn writes another book soon to follow on from The Christmas Present.

THE CHRISTMAS PRESENT BY EAMONN ALLEN, 5 Aug 2008
This review is from: The Christmas Present (Paperback)
The Christmas present is an enchanting saga.It can be read with equal delight as a simple story for children or as a moving parable for adults.
It begins when a boy from a poor home gives away his cherished Christmas present to his friend from the orphanage. It concludes when the boy,Father Christmas and the truly distinctive reindeer are liberated from imprisonment on Misery Island.
Misery Island is ruled by an obsessively evil dictator and its population is condemned to unremitting drudgery and unrelieved penury. In a sinister departure from this unsparing realism the inhabitants are all physically and mentally identical. This nation of toiling automata has no hope,no spirit and no God.
However, the ultimate freedom of Father Christmas and his retinue from this soulless golgotha is a glittering ray of sunlight in the enveloping gloom symbolising the redemption of mankind from the sheer misery of the unceasing struggle to exist.
As many families in Britain are tormented by debt and tortured by the omnipresent fear of unemployment Misery Island is becoming a harrowing reality for many.In a less lyrical moment Sirgfried Sassoon described life for the majority as 'an unlovel struggle against unfair odds ending in a cheap funeral'.
Eamonn Allen's book is a warm glow of consolation reminding us that there will always be hope for a battered and 'broken society' whether we believe it to be the eternal salvation of mankind or the simple belief that things can only get better. This might not seem immediately relevant to someone working 15 hours a day on telesales to pay a mortgage but in the dark moments of despair it will banish the cancer of futility.
The literary style is crystalline in its pure simplicity, written with the elegaic warmth of autumn sunlight.
Christmas 2008 is likely to be a fraught time for many. However, the Christmas Present should provide wonderful seasonal cheer for all who read it.Its message is profound but simple:your most precious gems are the hours and minutes of your life-never let the demons of fear and despair steal them.

An Irishman's perspective., 3 Dec 2006
This review is from: The Christmas Present (Paperback)
A clever lord of the rings evocation of the true spirit of christmas, the moral being that it is better to give than to receive and that generosity brings forth it's own rewards. The christmas present has replaced the polar express as my favourite fantasy yuletide yarn. Raymond Briggs move over, Eamonn Allen is going to usurp your throne!
