Amazon.co.uk Review

Slapstick humor gets a full-body workout in Christmas with the Kranks. Critics were unanimous in their derision, and John Grisham must have gnashed his teeth over what studio-boss-turned-director Joe Roth did to his bestselling novel Skipping Christmas, to which this broad-stroked comedy bears little or no resemblance. The title characters are played by Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, who decide to skip Christmas because their daughter's in Peru with the Peace Corps. Thus begins a rabid program of enforced conformity when their neighbors (led by Dan Aykroyd) coerce the Kranks into changing their holiday attitude--a change that comes easily when the daughter announces she'll be home for Christmas after all. Imagine if a suburban lynch mob said "Have a Merry Christmas or we'll kill you," and you'll get some idea of what spending Christmas with the Kranks is really like. And if you laughed at the frozen cat, you're probably on Santa's "naughty" list. --Jeff Shannon

Synopsis

Fed up with the commercial aspects of Christmas, particularly all the money spent, and alone for the holiday for the first time in decades, as their daughter has just joined the Peace Corps, grumpy Luther Krank and his sweet wife, Nora, decide to skip Christmas this year and forgo the gifts, the tree, the decorations, the cards, the parties and to spend the dollars saved on a 10-day Caribbean cruise.

A bit of festive fun 22 Nov 2005
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This is a reasonably watchable movie, perfect for the days leading up to Christmas when the madness starts to get to you!
It is well acted and you can sympathise with the characters' decision to escape for the festive season. Unfortunately, this decision doesn't go down too well with their neighbours who expect them to keep up the normal Christmas traditions.
There are the usual cringing and wincing moments -enough to keep the watcher entertained.
It is well worth a viewing, if only to enjoy the part where the Tim Allen character has botox. Classic! It made me cry with laughter!

A New Classic 17 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
I absolutely love this movie!!! For the last few years, I've watched it while putting up the Christmas tree - it really puts me in a festive mood. Sure, it's a bit silly, but isn't that part of the fun? There are some genuinely funny moments in it, like Tim Allen's suntan and eyebrow disaster, but I really love the way it all comes together to work out well for the Kranks.
Light-hearted, funny, and warm. Really enjoy it every year. If you enjoy "The Santa Clause", you'll love this.

why do we celebrate christmas?
This movie brought to my mind the very penitent question - why do we celebrate Christmas? I think the meaning of Christmas is getting lost to commercialism, partying and keeping up... Read more

A film that l can relate to. Funny in places but thought provoking. Can we ever avoid Christmas altogether? I think not.

By far my favourite Christmas movie ever
Hilarious film, cracks me up every time I watch it. Honestly can't understand why it only gets 1-2 stars when it comes on TV. A must watch for our whole family each year. Read more

Nowhere near as good as it should be.
Not sure why this gets as many 4 and 5 star reviews as it does. It's not a bad movie and I have to admit that I watch it every year. Read more

A frenzy of tragically bad slapstick
This film pretends to be all about the warm glow of love for humanity we're all supposed to feel over the holidays, but ends up reaffirming that the trappings and superficialities... Read more
