Like most cross stitchers I love to browse chart books and plan future projects. This book has plenty of charts, from samplers to small designs suitable for cards and ornaments, but for some reason the publishers felt we didn't need many photographs of the stitched examples.
As a result I'm less likely to stitch the anonymous designs, because I have only the vaguest idea of the result. To add to my frustration, they have printed identical photographs more than once - wasting space that could have shown different examples.
Anyway that's my grouse about this book, on the positive side there are 500 charts claimed ( I haven't counted them and less than a tenth are photographed) a good spread between cute snowmen, teddy bears & santas , some serious religious subjects (nativity, angels and doves) and traditional xmas subjects ( bells, candles, robins etc.). Charts are included for some frame elements to surround designs.
Specialist subjects include cross stitch labels for handmade gifts ( hand knitted by, hand crocheted by, etc.) and a nice page for babies ( grandmas star, baby's first Christmas). There's a cake band, and one page of tree ornaments. Larger projects include samplers, charts for all twelve days of Christmas ( but no photos or suggested project) and an advent calendar (photographed), there's several pages of text greetings, and several alphabets. Also included are a few pages on construction for the projects photographed - brief but useful.
the charts are attractive, and not too complex, in fact most designs would be completed in an evening. I'm keeping the book, and will probably use it, but I wish publishers would get their heads around stitchers wanting to see the end result in photographs before we start on a project.
