Taming of the Sheenans - Book 1

Since the loss of her family in a plane crash, Harley Diekerhoff has led a quiet life and keeps to herself. Taking the temporary job at the Copper Mountain Ranch as widower Brock Sheenan’s housekeeper seems perfect for her. But her calm cocoon is invaded with the arrival of Brock’s pre-teen twins, Mack and Molly who’ve never experienced a proper Christmas and before she knows it, Harley’s determined to make their holiday perfect.

Annoyed at first by Harley’s interference, Brock is secretly pleased she’s changed Mack and Molly’s world. It doesn’t hurt that he finds Harley incredibly attractive, fierce, smart and passionate. It’s also an added bonus that she’s not afraid to challenge him and get his blood heated! But when sparks fly and the attractions sizzles between them, Harley’s not so sure she can handle something permanent with this dark, taciturn cowboy who doesn’t know how to let her in. But Brock is determined to hold on to her and praying for a Christmas miracle…

4.0 out of 5 stars Good second chance at love story. 12 Dec 2014
By Jo-Anne
Format:Kindle Edition
Harley took a temporary housekeeper/cook job at a ranch in Montana over Christmas because she wanted to get away from the well meaning people who tried to get her to get over the pain of losing her 3 children and husband in a plane crash three years earlier. She thought being in a different area would help her handle the loss that was always worse at Christmas time. This was working out for her until the owner's 11 year old twins came home from boarding school unexpectedly. Harley didn't know her boss, Brock, had children and wouldn't have taken the job if she did know about them since they remind her of the ones she lost.

The children were babies when Brock's wife died and he has been raising them by strict rules, one of which was that there would be no holiday celebrations, including Christmas. Harley wants to leave as soon as the children arrive but is also sad about the lack of childhood activities and, therefore, memories for the children.

I liked the writing style of this author. It flowed well and kept me caught up in the story. Even though both Brock and Harley had lost their spouses, this wasn't a sad story but a positive second chance at love story that is quite believable. The character development let us know about the character's pasts in such a way that helped the reader understand them but not be saddened by their experiences. Harley was good to the ranch hands winning them over without even trying, just by doing things the way she thought they should be. I loved the twins, Molly and Mack, and what they added to this story.

I loved the attraction between Harley and Brock and wondered if they would be able to get over their loss and let themselves fall in love again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read for a novella 8 Dec 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Harley is still grieving from the tragedy in her life and can’t face her well meaning family at Christmas time. She takes a temporary job as a housekeeper on a ranch in Montana while their normal housekeeper is away. She loves the semi solitary life with the snow, looking out at the mountains, looking after the taciturn ranch owner, Brock, and his ranch hands.

Unknown to her Brock’s twin children appear one night having travelled home unexpectedly from boarding school. Painful memories of children are brought to the fore and emotions begin to run high.

A thoroughly good read and when things begin to happen they do happen quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas in Montana! 8 Dec 2013
By Sue P
Format:Kindle Edition
In Christmas at Copper Mountain by Jane Porter, Harley is looking for distance from the past and the chance to make new memories. A widower looking for escape, Harley takes a temporary job for Brock Sheenan as a housekeeper at his Copper Mountain Ranch in Marietta, Montana.

Brock has suffered loss he just wants the quiet and to be left alone. But he's noticing Harley way too much for his liking, she's not at all how he wants his housekeeper to look! He'd prefer she blend into the woodwork, not care, and not talk, but Harley is starting to grow on him.

Both Brock and Harley have endured tragedy and are still suffering. Not celebrating Christmas is just what Harley needs and just what Brock wants. Harley has no idea about Brock's past, until his two kids suddenly show up (early!) for Christmas break and change the whole scheme of things. Harley can't bear the thought of being around kids, especially at's also a part of her she isn't sharing. After a falling out and misunderstanding due to lack of communication, Harley realizes it matters to her what Brock thinks. There is a lot of chemistry simmering between Harley and Brock. With both of them trying to out run a past they can't face, they are going to have to choose between the past and the hope of the future. Will this be the Christmas of miracles? Can they recognize what they could have together?

Brock and Harley are both very dynamic characters in Christmas at Copper Mountain, they are complex and deep, and Jane manages to bring them to life and make us care for them in this novella. I could understand Harley and why she was doing what she was doing, although I had a harder time understanding why even after Brock's kids arrived she didn't tell him about her past right away...
