CD Description
Hip Christmas albums are few and far between. Let's face it, Christmas music is seldom very groovy. Organ king Jimmy Smith sets out to upset that norm however, with these bluesy, jazz-cast carols. From the cover photo of Smith decked out in a Santa suit, lampin' in a Jaguar with a back seat full ofpresents, its clear we're in for a spin on tradition. The track list is standard fare too, but as the faux-grandiose beginning of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" segues into the laid-back strut of Smith's combo and the work of his lightning-quick, rhythmically adroit right hand, it suddenly seems appropriate to don dark shades while sitting around the tree.
Album highlights include the nimble swing put on "Jingle Bells", the Latin-tinged version of "White Christmas", and Smith's electrifying solo segments in "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". The big band arrangements here give the recording asense of scale and punctuation, without diluting the subtleshadings of Smith's trio. With this disc, one can have the best of both worlds-- tinsel, eggnog breath, cool atmospherics and great musicianship.
