A Christmas treat from a treasured comic writer

Product Description

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY ALEXANDER MCCALL SMITH

A glorious collection of stories from the author of Cold Comfort Farm. The title story tells of a typical Christmas at the farm before the coming of Flora Poste. It is a parody of the worst sort of family Christmas: Adam Lambsbreath dresses up as Father Christmas in two of Judith's red shawls. There are unsuitable presents, unpleasant insertions into the pudding and Aunt Ada Doom orders Amos to carve the turkey, adding: "Ay, would it were a vulture, 'twere more fitting!"

Hurrah for Vintage for bringing out this long out-of-print collection of short stories by Stella Gibbons. The title story is an absolute gem, as the Starkadders preparations for Christmas include putting a coffin nail into the pudding to predict who will die next year and, although this is a mixed bag of tales, there's bound to be something here to please everyone. Stella Gibbons, as Alexander McCall Smith reminds us in his introduction, wrote her stories at a time before open-ended, elliptical, what-on-earth-actually-happened? tales became artistically fashionable and thank goodness for that. Most of the stories are fairly light, although in some, notably 'Sisters', there's some very sharp social comment. A real treat.

Being a big fan of Cold Comfort farm, I was really keen to read this. It was a bit of a disappointment that the book consists of short stories, only one of which is about cc farm. However I did enjoy the book, and although some of the stories ended (I felt) a bit abruptly, I am still glad I purchased it.

Having loved Cold Comfort for many years, I have to thank Vintage for republishing Christmas, which is a wonderful peek into the farm, pre-Flora. But sadly the rest of the collection has not aged well, and some of the stories are uncomfortable reading to a modern reader - the author's social attitudes which are there in CCF, but not oppressively so, come to the fore, and often jar with modern sensibilities.
