Book Description

8 May 2008 Oxford World's Classics
'What was merry Christmas to Scrooge? Out upon merry Christmas! What good had it ever done to him?' Ebenezer Scrooge is a bad-tempered skinflint who hates Christmas and all it stands for, but a ghostly visitor foretells three apparitions who will thaw Scrooge's frozen heart. A Christmas Carol has gripped the public imagination since it was first published in 1843, and it is now as much a part of Christmas as mistletoe or plum pudding. This edition reprints the story alongside Dickens's four other Christmas Books: The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man. All five stories show Dickens at his unpredictable best, jumbling together comedy and melodrama, genial romance and urgent social satire, in pursuit of his aim 'to awaken some loving and forbearing thoughts, never out of season in a Christian land'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

More About the Author

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Books 22 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I purchased this for a Christmas present. The book was good quality and the illustrations very traditional. It arrived very quickly. I have a very old copy of this book and it is a great introduction to the classic Christmas stories some of which are probably not so well known. A great stocking filler!

4.0 out of 5 stars A new tradition is born 23 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
The time of year is right - and for the second time I'm preparing to indulge myself with a few "reads" from this lovely version of the Dickens Christmas stories.

It's great to have a pleasant, decent-quality, b & w illustrated item, to enjoy immersing myself in. The book also contains a history of the life of Dickens himself, and extensive explanatory notes for the aid of a newbie reader - or a more experienced forgetful one!

Christmas is about keeping traditions - this book will provide a lovely one for any family to start. How about reading aloud to the kids or "olds" by soft light - very atmospheric!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous 7 Sep 2011
By Kath
Format:Hardcover
this was a book I had been meaning to buy for years. I had seen all the adaptations of A Christmas Carol but never read the book. I wasnt disappointed. It was just brilliant to read the words that you normally see acted out! And there are other stories in it too! Just brilliant and I will cherish it for the rest of my life!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol and other Christmas Books 5 April 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an old favourite and I believe one of the most popular works by Charles Dickens. I took part in a play based on this book at school 70 years ago and the words seem to be identical. The copy I purchased was not in very good condition
although it was readable but had comments added which rather spoilt it. Still a great book however.
