More About the Author

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

This is a seasonal classic and a very nicely re-worked version for children with good, friendly-looking illustrations. I highly recommend this for anyone wishing to introduce children to Charles Dickens at an early age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spooked and Inspired 26 Nov. 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
As a kid I was a little spooked out when I read or was told this classic story, but nevertheless enjoyed it. It's one of those that intrigues, rattles and edifies for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Before Christmas Must-Read 22 Nov. 2012

This tale echoes good memories from my `Christmas past'! As a kid, the story inspired me, and now, I encourage my kids to read it, for it's really great literature - poignant and timeless in its positive message.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good "Christmas Carol" intro for young kids (i.e. 4-6 year olds) 4 Jan. 2015
By Wakka - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a fine way to introduce the story of a Christmas Carol to children, which is quite full (being Dickens) of very grown up themes like greed, poverty, suffering, death, tragedy, ghosts, and general doom and gloom of industrial England.

The illustrations are cheerful and the impact of some of the above themes are reduced (but not eliminated). It worked for us to read it aloud, with the lights on!
3.0 out of 5 stars I would recommend it for younger readers 20 Feb. 2015
By Deborah Wohlleben - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this to my 10-year-old over the Christmas season. It's a decent version of the classic, what made it difficult for us was the language used. My 10-year-old wouldn't know what many of the words and terms meant, so there was a lot of explaining. Other than that, I would recommend it for younger readers, especially those who will either as for clarification or can do some research.
5.0 out of 5 stars My 4-year old loves it, the way it's written and its classical illustrations. 19 Nov. 2013

A perfect book to read around Christmas time. My 4-year old loves it, the way it's written and its classical illustrations... A very good deal. I highly recommend it.
