From the back cover:
'From gingerbread houses and spiced apple muffins to Christmas cupcakes, this charming book is packed full of recipes that will fill your kitchen with the mouth-watering smells of Christmas baking. Just follow the simple steps to bake scrumptious Christmas cakes and cookies - perfect to give away as gifts or to eat right away!'
Measuring in around 20.5 cm x 24.5 cm, this is a useful baking book for younger ones and those yet to experience the thrills of cooking. The appealing, durable thick hardboard covers have shiny enhancements and open up to 48 thick, numbered pages with a strong red spiral spine holding it all together. This spiral binding is especially useful because the book obediently stays open at the right place as everyone gathers around the table!
This publication is also suitably designed to stand up to a fair bit of wear and tear and the odd wipe down, when required!
The contents list opens the book and not only incorporates the recipe list:
* Christmas cookies
* Lemon cinnamon stars
* Shortbread
* Chocolate orange hearts
* Stained-glass windows
* Linz biscuits
* Mince pies
* White chocolate brownies
* Christmas cupcakes
* Spiced apple muffins
* Mini Christmas cakes
* Kringle
* Christmas log
* Maple syrup cupcakes
* Lebkuchen
* Chocolate Christmas cake
* Gingerbread houses
* Stollen
* Toppings and fillings
* Decorating ideas
* Wrapping ideas
but also offers an allergy-free recipe key symbol for recipes, i.e.:
* wheat-free
* gluten-free
* dairy-free
* egg-free
* contains nuts
which follow through to the top of the relevant recipe with an applicable header, e.g. replacing butter with a dairy-free spread.
The opening sections are:
* Getting started
* Baking skills
and include basic cautionary notes, including the need to wash hands at the very beginning.
Each main recipe is on a double-page spread and is clearly laid out with the aforementioned header note (if applicable) the title, an opening note, the list/s of ingredients - metric & imperial, and anything else you might need, e.g. cookie cutters or sugar sprinkles, along with the resultant quantity.
Then follows a clearly laid out and colourful method section, numbering between 6 and 12 steps per main recipe. These pages are also peppered with helpful notes, e.g. variation ideas and how long the finished product will keep for.
The 'Toppings & Fillings' section includes mincemeat, and the decorating section offers all sorts of ideas to add that little creative touch, depending on age and ability.
The 'Stained-glass Windows' and various cake recipes are by far and away the most popular in my groups and this is a book that isn't just for Christmas for the very reason that the recipes can be made whatever the time of the year - we just 'tweak' the artwork, with the youngest using 'icing pens' to create their own unique 'brand'!
All-in-all, this is a useful book with something suitable for all ages.
My only grumble is that the text is a little small in places but I am now word perfect on the whole book and it doesn't seem to trouble anyone else!
