Format:Audio CD
This is currently my favourite Christmas CD (and was last year too!). Eclectic versions from all round the world of well-known carols, all wonderful and some utterly insane ("God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" at double speed, played by a steel band - just inspired!). And "White Christmas" is considerably less cheesy sung in Spanish. (And actually rather lovely.) If it doesn't have you grinning in the first ten minutes of listening to it, then have a mince pie on me! Oh go on, take it anyway! Yes, this one. Here you go. Mmmm.

I like buying world music compilations and I have to admit to an occasional penchant for soft-soap nostalgia - hence this purchasse. Unfortunately the intepretaions of various Xmas carols/hymns/songs on this cd were mainly no better than elevator music to my ears. There were just two tracks of the 12 here that I bothered to rip to my pc: the Banks Soundtech Steel Orchestra from Barbados and flatpicking guitarist, Dan Crary.
The cd lasts under 38 minutes. Though, this is not that unusual with compilations on the Putamayo label from what I've seen previously. The title is rather odd considering that only one track is from outside the Americas, Los Reyes' version of 'White Christmas' - truly awful. Four tracks are from the US, and the remaining 7 from Cuba and the Caribbean. Seven of the 12 tracks were selected from Xmas albums, two tracks from the same one 'Cuba en Navidad'.

Watch out! If you already have Putumayo World Christmas...

If you already have Putumayo World Christmas, four of the 12 songs on this album are duplicates from that album. I don't understand why they released another Christmas album while the other one was still available if they weren't going to put all new songs on it.
That said, this is a great album. It's a ton of fun to hear songs from around the world about Christmas and a really good variety of songs from different areas.

If you love world music, you're going to love Putomayo. If you don't know world music and want to learn, this label is an excellent start. They provide you with just a taste of a variety of songs.
Christmas Around the World takes you from Haiti to France and back again. You get:
Haiti--1 song
USA--4 songs
Cuba--3 songs
Barbados--1 song
France--1 song
Martinique--1 song
It's a nice flavoring of all kinds of music and sounds.
If you have Putomayo's World Christmas, you have 1/3 of this CD. If you are looking for different Christmas music, this is mostly world covers of traditional Christmas music.
