Lovely little book! 21 Nov 2008

I bought this book last year and am buying more copies this year as gifts. The language is clear, well presented, the subject matter too. I found the cover illustration very old fashioned and ordered the Usborne book of the same name as a back up, but I find the content of this little book super. I would think the content fine for children around 4 or 5+, but especially excellent for a new reader or a struggling reader of say around 7 yrs.
If you need a book only about Santa and presents, don't get this one, but if you're looking for a thoughtful, sensitive introduction to how Christians around the world celebrate Christmas, treat your little ones to this. Enjoy!!

I was looking for a book to teach my children about how other countries celebrate Christmas. I grew up in Germany, so I started out by reading the section about Christmas in Germany and was very surprised to learn that, according to this book, children in Germany try to listen for Kris Kringle who comes through the window to bring gifts. By the time the kids go to bed on Christmas Eve in Germany, they will have opened their presents that were left behind by "Christkind" (Christ child), since they open their presents on Christmas Eve. There is no "Kris Kringle" in Germany.

After reading this, I decided not to even bother trying to use this book for my children - if they got the part about Germany so wrong, I wouldn't trust anything else in this book to be accurate.
