Although some great Christmas albums were recorded in the sixties, notably the Phil Spector album, people don't generally associate the sixties with Christmas music. That's particularly the case in Britain, where there was not one Christmas-themed hit of any significance. Yet closer inspection shows that plenty of great Christmas music was recorded during the sixties, including this album by the Four Seasons.
While this album sticks mainly to familiar classics, the Four Seasons have mixed things up a little by stringing some of them together in medleys with various sub-themes. So we get the Merry Christmas medley, the Excelcis deo medley, the First Christmas night medley and the Joy to the world medley. Elsewhere on the album, several familiar songs appear in their entirety including What child is this, Little drummer boy, Santa Claus is coming to town, I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus, The Christmas song and White Christmas, but I was particularly pleased with Carol of the bells, which suits their harmony singing ideally. The only truly original song is Christmas tears, but there's also Jungle bells, a song based loosely on Jingle bells though noticeably different.
If you enjoy the normal music of the Four Seasons and you're looking for a Christmas album that sounds reassuringly familiar, this could be just what you're looking for.
