Healed by Miss Marple 26 July 2010
By Kayt
Format:DVD
Some days it's just not possible to soldier on and you have to leave work early, go home and curl up in bed. This was my situation recently; what could have been a day and a half of misery was instead almost (if not for the reason I was there in the first place) pleasant. Miss Marple was a delightful distraction; the complete collection was a tonic.

I ought to point out that being off-colour is not a requirement to enjoying these marvelous tales by Agatha Christie. Bless her!

My only complaint is in the packaging. I don't like the way the dvds are contained as it makes it too difficult to swap them out or replace them securely. I have had to re-house them in cd covers to keep them safe.

I totally agree with other reviewers that the constant change in release dates for Marple Series 3 is very annoying. I have no idea why dvd companies do this. However all is not lost, there is an American dvd which contains all 4 episodes of Marple series 3 available. This item is listed on Amazon and isnt over priced. A word of warning - being an American dvd it is region 1 coded and will on play on such coded players, so please make sure your player is compatable.

The 4 episodes in the series are:-
At Bertrams Hotel which has been shown on UK television. A good episode which has been changed quite alot from the original Agatha Christie novel. The music score is excellent.
Ordeal By Innocence - this novel didn't feature Miss Marple but the adaption is good and Miss Marples inclusion fits in nicely. This story has been shown on UK television.
Towards Zero hasn't been shown on UK television yet so I won't give away any plot details. The story is in my opinion the best in this series and features the great Tom Baker as a guest star.
Nemesis also hasn't been shown yet. The story has been changed quite alot from Agatha Chrisite's novel but is again very enjoyable.

So, all in all this is the best series so far. I have rated this item 4 stars based on the quality of the programme rather than the UK dvd. Don't be put off by the changes to Agatha Christie's classic novels just sit back and enjoy some great drama with a top notch cast.

A Matter of Choice 11 Jan 2010

Simply for me.............as for many others Miss McEwan is my favourite incarnation of Miss Marple, next to Margaret Rutherford>
BUT in roles such as this it is personal reaction to the portrayal. Miss Marple is not a real figure so however one may disagree with any of the performances of the part it is not "inaccurate" merely not the way the reader saw or interpreted the character.
The are some gems in these versions of the stories; I especially loved At Bertrams Hotel.
Anyway - I love these and play them in rotation at regular intervals.

Good Series - Awful Packaging
The series is really good, if it was not for the bad packaging I would have given this a 4 star rating.

I've never encountered a DVD boxset with such a bad packaging. Read more

The worst Marple ever.
Geraldine McEwan's Miss Marple is simply appalling. The voice of Geraldine McWwan is sugary nosy, and she is dressed as a knitters nightmare, so you really wonder why nobody has... Read more

Dreadful Packaging!
Joan Hickson is, without doubt, the definitive Miss Marple and the productions seem to feel more like "Agatha Christie". Read more
