Excellent Book on "Indigenous Expansion of Christianity...!" 16 Feb. 2013
By Mj - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
In "Christianity as a World Religion," the authors-Sebastian Kim and Kirsteen Kim (Husband and wife..?) have thoroughly examined the history of global Christianity to portray Christianity's relationship with the world cultures so to infer that it is a World Religion, a ‘globalization from below.’ The title 'World Religion' is not to be understood as a term used for 'majority religion in the world, rather, a religion that belongs to every corner of the World..! Kims have experimented their thesis topographically, theologically, geographically socio-politically, historically and structurally to confront the contemporary expression of Christianity that it is a product of Western Christianity. In multi-perspectives, Sebastian Kim, the professor of theology and public life at St. York John University, UK and Kirsteen Kim, the honorary lecturer at the University of Birmingham, UK, scholarly show how gospel has impacted local cultures and the vice-verse from its inception of expansion.

This work is very much similar to the work of Sanneh, Tanslating the Message. Several prominent scholars like Andrew Walls, Philip Jenkins, Mark Noll, and Dana Robert have already exposed so much on the indigenous and cultural spread of Christianity, but Kims use their own nomenclatures to reiterate similar concept in a different way. Conversely, in this work, the authors have given a quality focus on the social issues, identity of women, class/castes, etc. This book adds more knowledge to the studies in understanding missions, evangelization and the spread of indigenous Christianity around the World. Language is very clear that no reader finds it difficult to understand what the authors are trying to say. A great book for theological students, especially for pastors and missionaries in India, who often confront accusation that "Christianity is a Western Religion."

The beginning of the book gives an excellent survey of origins and present day Christianity with some emphasis on Europe. Most of the chapters deal with the various parts of the world where Christians dominate or are very nunerous. The final chapter treats worldwide issues and transnational movements, The last section discusses.the ":world future of Christianity." A highly recommended excellent survey!
