An outstanding masterpiece of concision and understanding from the Master. In this short book Steiner demonstrates the roots of Christianity in the Ancient Mysteries of Greece, Israel, Egypt etc and how the Christ Revelation was designed to make public the spiritual transformation that was hitherto preserved for the few.
Steiner's understanding and reverence for the ancient Mysteries - Osirian, Essenic, Eleusinian etc - shines through in the chapters dealing with each one. His allegorical interpretations of, for instance, the stories of Osiris and Isis or Dionysus, are revelations in themselves. When he gets onto the New Testament he does not disappoint, with brilliant expositions on the Mystery Teachings concealed in the Gospel accounts and the Book of Revelation. Steiner manages to be totally Universalist, revealing the Golden Thread throughout Western esoteric history, as acknowledged, as Steiner shows, by St Augustine himself. In so doing, he moves beyond traditional Theological understandings of the Gospels and New Testament into their meaning as Mysteries, as they were intended. Christianity and Christ become universal rather than exclusive, specific and locked into a set of doctrines expounded by a temporal authority.
Highly recommended. This, along with his later and even greater masterpiece, 'From Jesus To Christ' is Steiner at his visionary best, reclaiming Western spirituality and using it to point to the future.
