This is by far the best, most comprehensive and most clear intro to Christian theology available. In any attempt such as this certain areas will not be handled with the utmost sophistication (perhaps outdated notions of Gregory of Nyssa not overcoming tritheism and the old chestnut about Barth's "modalism" being preserved) but on the whole it's impossible to envision a more sucessful, comprehensive and clear intro to Christian Theology.

This is just several books on Christian theology that I reccomend to everyone. It is not important are you theologian or theology student, Christian or non-Christian, this book can and will help you to enter in area of one of the most important tradicion in Western thought. It is very well organized with good furthere reading section. Writing style is great like in other McGrath's works. Author bring reader from one subject to another, simply and clearly. When you first time read this book you will learn every basic aspect of Christian thought. But I feel that you will not read in only once. I read many chapters again and again whenever I have some difficult with reading some other theological work.

Deserves to be a classic, especially because the author is clearly an excellent teacher as well as a respected scholar (often the two are not bedfellows) BUT 2 omissions : 1) where is Zoroaster and his influence on Judaism/Chrsitianity, a sorry omission 2) the review of medieval thought fails to make clear the debt we all owe to Muslim scholars pre the fall of Constantinople in relation to Greek Thought,especially Aristotle, his works and reception in the so called West.

Adequate as introduction but...
a book entitled "Christian Theology" has a moral duty to cover not only Protestantism and Roman Catholicism, but also the Orthodox - both Eastern and Oriental. Read more
