This book styles itself as a basic outline of Christian theology that assumes the reader knows nothing and takes him step by step through all major Christian theologies. As a recreational reader who wanted just that sort of basic introduction, I have found this book has lived up to its promise while also being easy to read. Subjects are not all covered in depth due to the material the book addresses. However, extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter allow the reader to explore each subject further.

As a mature student of theology it was important that I chose books which I would find easy to read and digest. This is such a book and I certainly recommend it to anybody embarking on Theological studies for the first time. The author suggests that it can be used as a straight through read for those who would wish to gain an overview on Christian Theology in one go, so to speak. I have found it useful in providing a starting point for research for essays that I must write as part of my particular course. There is no doubt that this book is an essential possession for all Reigious Studies students.

I used this book as a panic purchase during last minute revision and found it refreshingly clear and consise. Mcgrath outlines each area of Christian Theology in an thematic approach, not neglecting the historical. My only criticism is that it is not so in-depth, but does cover a lot of material and can point to other useful sources of more information. It got me through my exams so i can only recommend it to anyone with an interest in this subject!
