During his studies under Paul Kuen and Raimund Grumbach, German baritone Christian Gerhaher attended the Opera School of the Academy of Music in Munich and, together with his regular piano partner Gerold Huber, studied lied interpretation with Friedemann Berger. While completing his medical studies Christian Gerhaher perfected his vocal training in master-classes given by Dietrich ... Read more in Amazon's Christian Gerhaher Store

The Art of Song: Lied Edition

This attractively priced 13-CD edition presents an almost complete collection of Gerhaher’s discography to date, and it a true celebration to the captivating voice, loved by audiences across the globe.

It includes his famous cycles by Schubert, Schumann and Mahler which have set new standards in the art of Lieder singing, and also his more recent orchestral albums and excerpts from operatic recordings and oratorios. The edition contains bilingual vocal texts and an in-depth essay by Jens Malte Fischer, one of the leading German language writers on 19th century vocal art and composition.

About Christian Gerhaher

In the 2013/14 season, Gerhaher was honoured to be the first singer highlighted as Artist-in-Residence with the Berlin Philharmonic, the world’s most prestigious orchestra, following in the footsteps of international stars such as Lang Lang, Murray Perahia and Leif Ove Andsnes.

Since Gerhaher’s debut with the orchestra in December 2003 when he sang the baritone solo in Benjamin Brittenʼs War Requiem, Gerhaher has taken part in a series of spectacular concerts. Performances include Schumannʼs Paradise and the Peri, Orffʼs Carmina Burana, and Bachʼs Matthew Passion.

Christian Gerhaher is himself an enthusiastic teacher and gives regular masterclasses. He also holds workshops at the Academy of Music in Munich in his capacity as honorary professor. Christian Gerhaher is a member of the Bavarian Academy of the Fine Arts.

Christian Gerhaher performs frequently with conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Simon Rattle, Herbert Blomstedt, Kent Nagano, Mariss Jansons, Daniel Harding, Bernard Haitink and Christian Thielemann in the world’s major concert halls and opera houses.

Gerhaher's recordings have received almost universal acclamation and even adulation and this box is a cheap way to obtain a significant amount of his wonderful output. I'd record a few points however for the prospective purchaser. It does not (and doesn't claim to) include all his Lieder work so far for RCA, Arte Nova and Sony - notably Schwanengesang and Kindertotenlieder (with Huber in the piano version) are missing as is his more recent disc of Schubert. Instead, one of the discs is a series of extracts from his oratorio recordings - certainly not Lieder - and to my mind pointless and misleading. Nonetheless, given that the items included here are modern recordings which are mostly still available as single discs at much higher prices, this is a bargain. The 150 page booklet contains a short essay on Gerhaher by Jens Malte Fischer in English, French and German together with all sung texts in German and English, something that wasn't available for all the original releases.

Includes texts/translations 1 Jan. 2014

A nice gesture on Sony's part is the inclusion of a thick, cheap booklet with texts accompanied by their English translations. This is quite useful for a budget box, and I'm grateful that they cared enough to do this.
There is a very short essay in multiple languages, but no liner notes.

This 13-disc set (with a golden/brown/sepia cover) should not be confused with the 2-disc selection with a similar title (with a pale/gray/white cover):
Christian Gerhaher: Art of Song

In the comments to this 'review', I've included links to some if not all of the 'source' albums included in this box.
The program of the original releases is not always preserved here; sometimes the original album has been split across multiple discs and combined with material from other albums. However, at a quick glance it looks like almost all of the contents of those original albums have been included. (See the last two numbered, asterisked items for source recordings that were included only in part.)

Christian Gerhaher has a baritone voice of surpassing beauty and he is gradually adding power to his sound. In this collection, he sings just about every true song cycle in the German repertoire. The Schumann Dichterliebe and Liederkreis are masterful, the Schubert Schone Mullerin and Beethoven An die Ferne Geliebte equally so. Die Winterreise is beautiful but less heartbreaking than I expected (Gerhaher is not the micro interpreter Fischer Dieskau was--he doesn't do dramatic shifts in vocal color or emphasize individual words). His "Ruhe Meine Seele" not part of a cycle is in the running for the most exquisite rendition of any song on record. And all this at a nominal price. If anyone is starting a lieder collection, start here.

Fabulous interpretations of the lieder repetoire 28 Feb. 2015
By Henry D. Shapiro - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Christian Gerhaher is a wonderful singer (maybe the best baritone lieder singer singing today), who has a most sensitive accompanist in Gerold Huber. 13 CDs for the price Sony/Amazon is charging is a steal, even if, like me, you aren't interested in some of the CDs because the music isn't to your taste -- just so you know, my wife and I are lieder fanatics, so we really appreciate the Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler... but could have done without the romantic opera arias... but as I said, at this price, who cares if there are a few CDs you wouldn't have bought if sold on their own.
