Christian Dior pulled off a coup that would revolutionise the international fashion scene when he showed his first collection on 12 February 1947. Thus was the 'New Look' born, which made his Paris fashion house world-famous overnight. Today Dior's early collections symbolise the rebirth of Paris haute couture after 1945. Within only a few years Christian Dior rose to rule over a flourishing luxury empire and was celebrated throughout the world as the monarch of fashion until his sudden death in October 1957. His twenty-two haute couture collections - including the celebrated A and H as well as Tulip lines - comprising some three thousand models, represent a design legacy that, more than any other, wrote 20th-century fashion history. This superlative publication marks two anniversaries: it is published sixty years after the first Christian Dior collection was launched and fifty years after his untimely death. For the first time the links between Christian Dior and Germany in the founder years of Maison Dior (1947-1957) are focused on. Twenty original, for the most part unpublished Dior models from German museums are shown, including the fabulous Marlene Dietrich Collection in Berlin. The twenty-four Dior fashion jewellery sets made in Pforzheim presented here are astonishingly fine and richly diverse. This huge, high-quality softbound volume is, in brief, a most fitting tribute to the great Christian Dior on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. The book is filled with superb full-page photography, mostly in black and white, of everything Dior, from his gowns to his accessories to his atelier in Paris and his fashion shows. As the book's title implies, the focus is on Dior's connections with Germany in his great years, 1947-1957. Several of the photographs feature the immortal Berliner Marlene Dietrich in Dior creations. Altogether a wonderful book!

The book reproduces many historical records from the Dior archives along with some news articles from German newspapers.
The photos of course are the main attraction, and the book is richly illustrated with lots of clear b/w and recent color photos depicting Dior's beautiful dresses and jewelery. Recommended for all fans of Dior and fashion photography.

In the early postwar years, Christian Dior, a true artist and "amoureux des femmes" (women's lover), created an ideal dream world of beauty, poetry and creativity to counter harsh reality and "regain a piece of all the happiness that had been lost". That what this great book is all about. A 2007 exhibition catalogue actually, it is full of wonderful documents (photos by Willie Maywald, Irving Penn,Horst P. Horst, Walde Ruth...) and very precise informations about not only gorgeous Dior models, but also accessories, with a very detailed focus on Dior costume jewellery."An outstanding proof of the miracle that arose in the fusion of artwork and craftsmanship, industrial dynamism and business acumen... in the person of Christian Dior".
