Product Description

Named "Christian" to avoid hassles (some things never change), this is the most famous, the most celebrated astrology book in the English language. It has been prized by students ever since its first publication in 1647. The Horary Astrology in these pages, in the hands of a master, is no mere parlour game. It is demanding and precise, combining science and art. Properly used, it will give answer to any well-defined question. William Lilly, famous throughout England for his almanacs & forecasts (he predicted London's Great Fire of 1666), lived during the English Civil War & was a minor historical figure in it. Into his studio came the rich and poor, nobles and commoners, with problems great and small. This new edition restores Lilly's original page layouts, with marginalia. Modern spelling throughout, this edition includes Lilly's bibliography, his original index & a new glossary. Also includes his original woodblock charts, and their modern versions. This is Lilly's great work as he himself knew it. In this volume: Book 1, An Introduction to Astrology, containing the use of an ephemeris; the erecting of a scheme of heaven; nature of the twelve signs of the Zodiac, of the planets; with a most easy introduction to the whole art of astrology. Book 2, The Resolution of All Manner of Questions, by a most methodical way, instructs the student how to judge or resolve all manner of questions contingent unto man, viz, of health, sickness, riches, marriage, preferment, journeys, etc. Some 35 questions inserted and judged.

Christian Astrology was until the 80s pretty much rotting within the confining archives of the academic establishment who, being too ignorant to test out Lilly's practices, simply filed the books under 'things we don't believe any more' and it took a private reprint by the late Olivia Barclay to put the information back where it belongs - within the grasp of anyone who can then make up their own minds on the subject. For my own use, I prefer Deborah Houlding's Ascellus edition but this is a great addition to any serious astrological library. For those not familiar with the topics, William Lilly (a well renowned 17th century astrologer) shares his approaches to horary and natal work; and includes some fascinating real life examples which are both top notch astrology and give great insights into 17th century English life. They can also be quite funny, check out the tale of the stolen fish supper! Lilly is not the originator of these techniques and he cites his sources from the classical, Muslim and Christian worlds; the unique point is that you catch an astrologer in action rather than simply discussing points of technique.
Incidentally, the publisher's note is rather offensive on the matter of the title: yes, the book is so titled in part to avoid unpleasant interference from the religious authorities of the day but it is also clear throughout the book from Lilly's own comments that he was himself a Christian; although clearly able to think for himself which is exactly what people with stereotypical views of Christianity (or Hermeticism)
seem unable to do. If you feel either that the term 'Christian' is somehow off putting or that Christians shouldn't be dealing with this subject matter then a plague on both your houses. Truth belongs to no one creed or group of people.

Essential Horary Astrology Text 22 April 2005
By Christopher Warnock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Christian Astrology is the most important book on horary astrology by probably the best ever horary astrologer William Lilly. It would be a hard choice, but I would have to say that if I could only have one astrology book, Christian Astrology would be it. As a professional astrologer I literally use it every day.

We are so lucky to be living at a time when this most classic of horary texts is so easily available. The debt that his contemporaries owed Lilly is clear when you see how much they stole right out of Christian Astrology. Christian Astrology has so much more detail on almost any horary question than any other traditional source. All traditional astrologers, whether natal, electional or horary, need a copy of this essential text!

The Astrology Classics version comes in two volumes, Books 1&2 of Christian Astrology in one volume and Book 3 in the other. You really need both, yes, I know that Book 3 is natal astrology, but there is all sorts of useful information in it for horary and vice versa. Get both volumes!

The Astrology Classics version is not a facsimile, it is in modern font with modernized spelling. It contains the original Lilly example charts along with modern, computer calculated versions of the chart examples. The pagination is the same as the original and the marginal comments and glosses are included as well. The Astrology Classics version also contains the original index now alphabetized more consistently and a new glossary.

If you are serious about horary astrology, particularly if you are practicing horary, you are probably going to want a copy of Christian Astrology in hard copy or book form. It is a whole lot easier to flip through this way.

Astrology Classics has really done a great job with this version. The layout is clean and appealing and the books are quite reasonably priced. If you want a copy of Christian Astrology in book form, this is the one to get!

A monument of astrology 1 Nov 2007
By Melsorder - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Very nice publication of a fundamental text for any (would-be) astrologer. Not really for beginners though, as rather much is assumed as common knowledge, and the style is dense. Book 2 (second part of published volume 1) is geared to previsions/horary matters.
