"This volume is meant to be more like a meditation upon scripture than a work of scholaship. . . . From the beginning it was intended to be a study of the Book of Mormon's contributions to our understanding of Christ."
I generally don't enjoy devotional books; I prefer to read scripture, honest history, or personal narrative. But Elder Holland is among the very best writers (and speakers) in the Mormon church. His style is clear and literate, with little of the bombast favored by less talented churchmen.
In Christ and the New Covenant: The Messianic Message of the Book of Mormon, Elder Holland has produced a thorough and readable survey of Mormon christology as embodied by the Book of Mormon. He draws illustrations and insights from every section of the Book of Mormon. He effortlessly convinces the reader that the Book of Mormon, published before the Church was founded, teaches the complete doctrine of Christ - those aspects that are unique to Mormonism as well as the biblical doctrines that are shared by christendom.
