Product Description

Review

Praise for Christ the Lord"
""Riveting. . . . Rice's book is a triumph of tone -- her prose lean, lyrical, vivid -- and character. As he ponders his staggering responsibility, the boy is fully believable -- and yet there's something in his supernatural empathy and blazing intelligence that conveys the wondrousness of a boy like no other. . . . With this novel, she has indeed found a convincing version of him; this is fiction that transcends story and instead qualifies as an act of faith. Joins Nikos Kazantzakis's The Last Temptation" of Christ" and Endo's A Life of Jesus as one of the bolder re-tellings."
--"Kirkus Reviews" (starred)

Praise for Blood Canticle"
""When Anne Rice releases a new book in The Vampire Chronicles series, cheers from her huge fan base can be heard everywhere."
--"The Edmonton Journal"

"From the Hardcover edition."

a chance meeting 1 Dec 2009

I found this book in the shop at Bangkok airport, read it from cover to cover on the flight and wanted more. I wish that I had had my bible with me for reference. Anne Rice has uncovered the real difficulties of being human and living with humans. The consequences of our actions, even the slightest act, either good or bad and it's repercussions in a small community. I loved Jesus before reading this, but I now can visualise the man, magical.

a slow burner 20 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I was disappointed with the earlier chapters and feared that this novel would degenerate into a minor soap opera of everyday life in first century Galilee. My experience of Anne Rice`s novel sequences is that they begin brilliantly but then steadily decline. I feared that this would happen again. I particularly disliked the introduction of purely fictional characters, especially after Rice had done such a great job of introducing Jesus`s extended family in OUT OF EGYPT.
My fears were groundless. Rice knows exactly what she is doing. When the narrative reurns to "Gospel" incidents - the baptism in the Jordan, the temptations in the wilderness, the Cana wedding the story comes together beautifully. I`m now looking forward to volume three.

I adore Anne Rice and I'm fascinated by her quest to write Jesus's story, from his point of view. It's inspired, and while this book is a bit slow and makes you question if you are sticking with this just because it's Anne Rice, it really is worth it if you have any sort of religious curiosity. I have to say, this book made me see Jesus as a man, rather than Christ the Lord, which is surely what the Bible tried to get across! It feels much more "real" than the stories I learned at school. It's very thought provoking, but still feels like a warm-up to the main action. If she writes at this pace, it's going to take decades before we get to the resurrection! But, Anne, I applaud you, and I look forward to the next installment. Rather this than some of the self-indulgent, lengthy prose you've written in some of the latter Vampire/Mayfair stories. Bring on the feeding of the five thousand!
