Book Description

29 Sep 2006
Everything you think you know about guitar heroes is wrong.

In the pantheon of guitar gods of the past 35 years-Page, Hendrix, Gilmour, Beck, Clapton-there has been one name missing. Chris Spedding.

On the annual lists of the greatest guitarists of all time-invariably a stew of heavy metal pyrotechnicians, old school bluesmen, murky grunge players, and the usual '60s and '70s suspects, with Jimi Hendrix inevitably at the summit-one rarely finds low-key session guitarist and solo artist Chris Spedding.

To rectify this crime against Anglo-American musical heritage, meet the Great Lost British Guitar Hero. Sometimes described as "to the left of Dave Edmunds and to the right of Brian Eno" and "the best guitarist you've never heard of," Spedding has played on over 200 recording sessions for a wide spectrum of flashes-in-the-pan and renowed artists (Paul McCartney, Donovan, Elton John, John Cale, Katie Melua, Bryan Ferry). As a producer he has worked with the Sex Pistols, Dee Dee Ramone, the Nils, and the Cramps. He also found time to enjoy Top 20 success in the U.K. with his own 1975 hit "Motorbikin'".

This biography of an underrated, reluctant guitar god, will make you reconsider what you think about rock music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spedding worshippers unite 6 Nov 2006
By Amy M.
Format:Paperback
Kimberly Bright is quite simply the Ken Burns of British rock music. She has managed to track down and interview everyone imaginable who has worked with the brilliant and undervalued guitarist Chris Spedding. I knew practically nothing about the man, aside from his wonderful music, before I read this book and now I feel that I really have insight into him as an artist and as a person. It's not a 500-page mash note from a fan; she unflinchingly describes his flaws and mistakes, not just his talent, humor, influence, and good taste in clothes. I won't spoil the last chapter for anyone, but if you were adopted as a child or gave a child up for adoption yourself, I guarantee that it will make you weep. I look forward to listening to Spedding's next CD and reading Bright's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars At long last! 1 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback
Finally, a biography of one of Britain`s most talented and most commercially ignored guitarists. Encompassing exhaustive details of both Spedding`s personal life and work from 1944 to the present, Kimberly J. Bright has researched and written a fantastic book.

The information - warts and all! - is a delight to read. There are contributions from many musicians with whom Spedding worked from the early 1960s, plus comments from the man himself.

It`s not only a fascinating insight to the ups and downs of one man`s musical career but also provides Spedding`s professional opinions of the British and American music industry over the past four decades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting biog of a fantastic musician 9 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Chris Spedding is a fascinating character, as well as being an amazing guitarist. Having met him a few times in the '70s, I was keen to find out a bit more about him. The book gives a good insight into his influences and motivation, as well as his somewhat chaotic personal life.
The downside is that the eBook shows no discernible sign of having been proof-read at any time. Words are randomly hyphenated in the middle of lines (Spedd-ing appears frequently) and large junks of text are repeated verbatim. Apart from that I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in his music.
