Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Just before all commercial hell broke loose for Chris Isaak, he made another record drenched in reverb, salty tears (he'll have you believe his heart is forever being broken), and the scent of lust. Ignoring the wave of pop and punk-inspired rock that was gaining notice in the late 1980s, Isaak continued in his adoration for artists like Roy Orbison and Elvis (uh, Presley), and wailed on "Cryin'", "Lie to Me", and "You Owe Me Some Kind of Love". Isaak's bad-boy tease is irresistible on "Lover's Game", and he exudes a hopeful, endearing optimism on "This Love Will Last", His classic "Blue Hotel" steals the show (he should have earned his fame on this track instead of "Wicked Game"), and his cover of "Heart Full of Soul" (originally done by the Yardbirds) is faithful and passionate. --Lorry Fleming

Chris Isaak, the album, is a truly magnificent piece of work for fan's of Isaak's earlier style. He may have been younger when this came out, but it features some of his best songwriting ever, on classic tracks such as 'Lie to me' and 'Blue Hotel.' His music style has changed a little over the years, and it was mostly the work in these early albums that brought about comparisons with the likes of Presley, Orbison and Nelson. His voice then is as strong and as beautiful as it is in his work today, and much of the best of his work is on this album. -Vicky Backhurst

On the surface, this is a stylish retro album with Elvis/Orbison-inspired crooning accompanied by lovely western/surf guitar as well as an ace rhythm section. But the result amounts to more than the sum of the parts. You get Isaak's warm but heartbroken voice, plus James Wilsey's guitar which morphs into a second voice coming straight out of eternity. The wordless, chilling lamentations not only complement the lyrics perfectly but add another dimension. At times the music actually has hypnotic effects as it takes you to another time and place. I mean, these are love songs that made dreamscape-maker David Lynch sit up and listen.

Just as good as the first and subsequent albums, with his infamous hit "Blue Hotel". A must own for any true fan, his voice just gets better and better.
