Along with June Christy, Helen O'Connell, and Julie London, Chris Connor epitomized cool jazz singing in the 1950s. Influenced by Anita O'Day, the torchy, smoky singer wasn't one for aggression. Like Chet Baker on the trumpet or Paul Desmond and Lee Konitz on alto sax, she used subtlety and restraint to their maximum advantage. At the University of Missouri, Connor (who had studied ... 5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME 26 Jan 2008
By Stuart Meyers - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I FIRST HEARD THIS (ORIGINAL LP AT THE TIME) AS A TEENAGER IN ATLANTA. 53 YEARS LATER "WOW". IT WAS MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH "PROGRESSIVE JAZZ" OR "WEST COAST JAZZ". EVERY CUT IS A+ BOTH IN FIDELITY, WORDS, MUSIC, AND THE KILLER BACKUP OF GROUPSELLIS LARKINS TRIO, VINNIE BURKE QUARTET, RALPH SHARON GROUP. the price is surely right. only june christy comes close to chris. june recommended chris to stan kenton when see left kenton for her illustrious career as a solo Capitol artist. they both had a smokey, sexy, low registered voice. of course, sarah vaughn and ella are great jazz singers, ella not as smokey sexy, and sarah more diverse with her amazing vocal range. go for it: one of the greatest jazz singers at her very best. this particular cd was issued in 1994 "under license from bethleham music company. manufactured and distributed by rino records through warner brothers.." KILLER TUNES THAT CHRIS MADE FOREVER FAMOUS FROM THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS OF THE MID 1950s; ALL ABOUT RONNIE, I HEAR MUSIC, COME BACK TO SORRENTO, FROM THIS MOMENT ON, taken from her first and best and earliest recordings from the great BETHLEHEM archives. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Chris Connor 3 Oct 2008
By Jose L. Saenz - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Years ago I came to know about Chris Connor who at the time sang with the Stan Kenton Band. " When the wind was green", was a song I loved and never again heard until recently on a cd I ordered from you. It is a beautiful song, unfortunately not well known. Anyone who likes that West Coast Jazz type of music should hear it. I know they will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of her best 7 Jun 2014

This, Connor's first album for the Atlantic label, is often considered by fans to be her best effort for the label. This is the mono version of the lp; the stereo version offers slightly different re-recordings, especially noticeable on "Get Out of Town." Definitely worth a listen also recommended are her recordings "He Loves Me He Loves Me Not" "A Jazz Date with Chris Connor" and "Free Spirits."
