Chris Botti is no doubt a very good Jazz trumpet player, who as he says in this concert was inspired at the age of 12 by hearing Miles Davis play "Funny Valentine". But like Miles in some ways he has made a career out of attracting a bigger audience than Jazz usually gets these days.
We have here a wonderful band and an orchestra that gets conducted at times by Burt Bacharach - the ultimate in Easy Listening hip. The programme is virtually all Jazz "standards" - although the tunes are gentle and familiar. But the band do get to stretch out on a funky "Why Not" - where Botti starts to introduce them. So, Billy Kilson has to be one of the best drummers playing in Jazz and starred in Dave Holland's quintet for example. James Genus is again at the forefront when it comes to Jazz bass players and is pretty good at funk/fusion too!
What will attract people who are not Jazz fans though, is the lineup of guest singers from the world of Pop - like Sting who does a couple of standards and then sings "Message in a Bottle" as part of the bonus features. Jill Scott, Paul Cole and Renee Olstead do a good job, but Gladys Knight really stands out with "Lover Man"!
I think this a really good package for those who like music that's a bit more "sophisticated", but has a lot of familiar elements - you get 157 minutes and some good bonus features. Great value for money and a good introduction to this "sound world".
Of course this music suits the Blu Ray treatment - high quality picture goes without saying - but the music really benefits from the crystal-clear surround sound mix - where you can hear every detail of the orchestra and the band - losing nothing of the experience.
I love the sound and the playing although the choice of material was a little bland for my taste, which is why I only give it 4 stars - but overall it's great, tasteful, melodic playing and singing which should appeal to a wide audience.
