Product Description

Product Description

Based on his Perrier-nominated Edinburgh hit show of 2004, "Chris Addison's Civilization" is a comedy lecture series for Radio 4. It neatly follows on from Chris's first Radio 4 series, "The Ape That Got Lucky". Western Civilization, like many very old things, is pretty much on its last legs. And if Western Civilization as we know it is dying sooner rather than later, we're going to have to build ourselves a new one. And how are we going to do that, then? "Chris Addison's Civilisation" explores exactly what we need to create a new, shinier, betterer civilisation (apart from planning permission - that's obvious). Accompanying Chris on his journey is noted expert and renowned polymath Professor Austin Herring (Geoff McGivern). Dan Tetsell and Jo Enright are also on hand to illustrate the jokes, stories, wild conjecturing, half-truths and even facts that make up the lectures.

Great 20 Sep 2006
By D. Penn
Format:Audio CD
Chris Addison is, I reckon, the best standup comic on the circuit. His live shows are hilarious and genuinely intelligently witty, and he's at completely the opposite end of the spectrum to those who just stand on stage and insult their audiences.

I saw Addison's standup show this series is based on, and though the live show was, I thought, funnier, he's done a very good job of rewriting it for radio. It takes the form of a 'lecture' (albeit hilarious) recorded in front of a live audience, with recorded sections enacting scenarios dreamed up in the lectures. The best bits tend to be the lectures themselves - I found the recorded segments missed the mark occasionally - and the titles of supposed books written by his colleague, the Professor ('Toad in the Hole; a anthology of unfortunate kickboxing accidents' for example).

This is an ideal purchase for a long car or plane journey, as it really needs your full attention to appreciate; distractions will just mean you miss jokes. If you get a chance to see him live, jump at it! Please vote for this review if you found it helpful; thanks!

Brilliant buy! 9 Sep 2010
By Molly
Format:Audio CD
I love this CD and this comedian. I first heard the series on Radio 4 and had to buy it. This album lives in my car to get me through long and tedious journeys and traffic jams, although fellow motorist might find me laughing out loud while on my own in my car rather alarming.

Its a collection of observational comedy about humankind both past and future with very relevent modern references, traditional comedy stock characters (like the overcharging builder and the self-important, best-selling, book plugging author) and some entertaining characters provided by a cast of comics and actors in addition to Chris.

If you like comedy raconteurs and the likes of Lee Mack, Michael MacIntyre, Eddie Izzard and Monty Python, you might well enjoy this line of comedy.
