Product Description

A shallow grave and a pornographic drawing draw Lucas Davenport into a deadly quest for a predator with a single-minded hunger for his chosen prey. In the mist and rain of a Minnesota spring, a shallow grave is found. It contains the body of a young woman, apparently strangled. When the murder is connected with a brilliantly-executed erotic drawing, where the victim's face has been grafted onto a pornographic internet image, Lucas Davenport becomes involved. More of the drawings come to light and Davenport, with the help of a local sheriff's deputy, makes a grisly discovery. The drawings may represent more murder victims, strangled with a starter rope from an antique outboard motor. As Lucas investigates further, he uncovers a web of deceit, related to a series of young women involved in the arts. All of them had some connection to the local university, and all of them had a new boyfriend who remained unseen by their friends. There the trail seems to end until further investigation of the grave site results in an horrific discovery. On the misty, oak-covered hillside south of Minneapolis, the case begins to come together in Lucas' mind, but the mixture of ferocious intelligence and madness which he faces means that the deaths must continue, that the chosen prey must be stalked...

DISAPPOINTING 24 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
I have never given a Prey book less than 5 stars before now but this book just didn't work for me. Where is the old Lucas? Gone is the hot headed, on the ball, smouldering sexy guy and in his place we have a luke warm, middle aged family man who couldn't spot a clue if it jumped out and bit him! Unfortunately, when you are used to the sort of writing in the earlier books in the Prey series, this just doesn't work. Weather is back which means Lucas has no other love interests which to me were a great part of the old Lucas and gave more depth to his character. Also, the killer in this book just didn't scare me. Frankly I didn't care whether any of the women he came across got killed or not. I didn't get a feel for the characters like you normally do. None of the victims were personal to Lucas which in turn meant Lucas didn't get worked up about the case. Even the fact that Kidd makes a guest appeareance in this one did nothing to liven things up. Sorry John, but for me this has to be your worst Prey book. I have the next two in the series and just hope they are as good as the previous ones.

Another high quality outing for Lucas Davenport and co., with a typically well-observed story of an art historian with a taste for more than pictures draped around the framework of upheavals going on in the lead charcters life evident in the previous books in the series. Sandford is almost unique, for me, in the genre by establishing charcters who can wise-crack without sounding too scripted, and who can be attractive and sensual without seeming too irritatingly superhuman. Somehow we still end up caring about our main protagonists, and wanting to spend more time in their company. Smooth and easily digested, the chapters slip past without the fireworks of a Dennis Lehane or George Pelecanos, but its none the less worthwhile a read for that, and the tension is still piled on where appropriate. Heartily recommended, like all the others in the Prey series.

John Sandford definitely captures something of Minnesota and its people. He is a powerful writer and the book is, yes, hard to put down. But its very efficiency is a weakness. Towards the end he forces his characters into some unlikely moves to keep up the kill rate. Given the subject matter is fairly unpleasnat to begin with, this leaves a nasty taste.
