Product Description

These are live recordings but the audience were obviously so silently absorbed that it's easy to forget their presence. Their enthusiastic applause comes as a real surprise, although it's not hard to see what they were so excited about. Janina Fialkowska won huge plaudits for her ATMA Chopin recital earlier this year, and this is destined to join it as a definitive concerto disc in the closing stages of the composer s 200th anniversary. Chopin's two concertos are fresh-minted in her hands; such is her marvellously mercurial playing. If you thought you knew all there was to know about these concert-hall warhorses, you haven t heard Janina Fialkowska. Stephen Pritchard --Observer 28/11/10

The re-emergence of Janina Fialkowska after her recovery from cancer had been one of the joys of this Chopin bicentenary year, and here she gives lustrous, limpid performances of the two piano concertos. Fialkowska has always been noted for her Chopin: her playing here deploys grace, fluency and strength with artless sensitivity. Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra do the necessary in their supporting role, but Fialkowska's golden playing is the real ear-opener. GN --Telegraph 27/11/10

After a career-threatening illness, this Canadian Polish pianist made a timely comeback with the Chopin recital that must rank among my discs of the year. Now, as the composer's 200th anniversary draws to a close, her record company has issued a live recording of the two concertos, demonstrating again her imaginative command of the idiom, in a way that underlines Chopin's Polish genes rather than his French sensibility. It's a pity she didn't have a better orchestra than the Vancouver Symphony, but the dis is worth the investment just for the richness and vitality of Fialkowska's pianism. --Financial Times

Fine Performances of Chopin's Two Piano Concertos 18 Nov. 2010
By J Scott Morrison - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Janina Fialkowska is a Canadian pianist whose name was familiar to me from her winning the first Arthur Rubinstein competition in 1974. But until recently I had never heard her perform either live or on record. Then last year I got her Chopin solo disc Chopin Recital and was mightily impressed, especially with its poetic qualities. So it was a no-brainer to get this new disc of her live performances of the Chopin piano concertos. (It appears she has been recording a lot of Chopin recently, most likely because this is the composer's 200th birthday year. She has also recorded the Etudes, Sonatas and Impromptus on a 2CD set Etudes Sonatas & Impromptus, which I have not heard.)

This disc is a real winner. Just listen to the clips from the middle movements of the two concertos to hear what I've described as poetic playing. Her unfailingly gorgeous tone is wedded to an ability to mold each phrase beautifully. As a pianist I am in awe of her seemingly effortless but special pedaling. Her legatos are silken. The technique heard in the display passages in the outer movements is breathtaking. (I will need to get her recording of the Etudes to hear more of this.)

She is sensitively accompanied by the fine Vancouver Symphony conducted by their long-time music director, Bramwell Tovey. Chopin's sometimes muddy orchestration is clarified in these performances.

Fialkowska has recorded the Concertos before in the unusual transcriptions for string quintet of the orchestral accompaniment. I have not heard those performances.

an exceptional disc 4 Nov. 2013
By Steven Galt - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I have been listening to these concertos for almost 30 years and have almost as many CDs of them. Over the years I've bought discs by far better known pianists and the occasional 'unknown' too, due to a great review. Fialkowska was unknown to me, and I am simply blown away by the freshness and panache of her playing! At first I found the piano timbre a little dry but, because I have found myself unable to stop listening to her performances, I have not only gotten used to it but now appreciate the clarity of textures and crystalline delivery it affords.
I am not a professional but have studied and played these concertos for years and am very familiar with the 'greats' playing these pieces - Argerich, Rubinstein, Cherkassky, Cliburn etc. But I must say I find myself constantly holding my breathe in amazement at the way she handles a melodic line, or simply smiling at the felicitous turn of her phrasing, or amazed at the extreme control of her dynamics. I am astonished this pianist is not trumpeted more by her label, but I guess she'd have to be 20 years younger and Asian for that!? Passion, power, delicacy and yearning,... it's all here.
In any case, anyone who loves these pieces needs to hear Fialkowska play them. And if you're looking for a first purchase of these pieces - go get this one - you'll feel everyone else you hear afterwards is cavalier in their playing!
