Review

There's no prescribed order for playing the 20 Chopin waltzes that Stephen Hough includes in this delightful, effortlessly stylish collection, and Hough opts to present the eight pieces Chopin sanctioned for publication in his lifetime first, in chronological order, from the E flat major Op 18 to the Waltz in A flat Op 64 No 3, before moving on to the posthumously published ones. As a sequence it works well, allowing Hough to set off his marvellously coloured account of the introspective A minor Waltz Op 34 No 2 with the much more extrovert examples in A flat and F from the same set on either side, for instance. But in fact I suspect that whatever the order chosen, the result would have been equally convincing, for Hough's playing has such authority and panache, its balance between virtuosity and vividly communicated expression so finely judged, that every perfectly scaled moment is as intensely realised as every other. Few other pianists around today play Chopin with as much understanding and poised mastery as this. --Guardian,28/07/11

Chopin's waltzes are salon pieces, but always more than salon pieces, and Hough brings an astonishing range of touch to them. All those sophisticated inner parts and harmonic shifts are brought out with the greatest insouciance and style. Impishly, he ends this disc with a nocturne, Op 9 No 2, as if to show that it is actually a waltz in disguise.***** --Daily Telegraph,11/08/11

Stephen Hough brings out all the wit and wierdnes, elation and poignancy of all the works on this disc. This is an album to be savoured for years to come. The disc is produced by Andrew Keener,so it almost goes without saying that it is demonstration quality. ***** DISC OF THE MONTH --Classic fm Magazine,Oct'11

CD Description

Stephen Hough has a unique affinity for the music of Chopin, whose music has always been a central part of his repertoire. His earlier Chopin recordings for Hyperion garnered huge critical acclaim. Houghs name has become synonymous with pianistic elegance, flawless technique and immense musicianship and he has become globally renowned for his engaging and refined Chopin interpretations. In his published Waltzes Chopin brought a new level of sophistication to this popular dance form. His unpublished Waltzes are generally less complex but display considerable wit and charm, qualities ideally suited to Houghs pianism. The disc is rounded off with the famous E flat major Nocturne, which gives a more lyrical expression to the metre of the waltz. These illuminating and compelling performances are not to be missed.

Superb 11 Oct 2011
By Elpenor
Format:Audio CD
In this recording, Stephen Hough has really surpassed himself. He plays the Waltzes in such a deliciously elegant and playful way, it's a joy from start to finish. You can practically sense how much Hough is enjoying himself throughout these pieces. Another thing is that he brings out so many felicitous details and makes the pieces really sound fresh, yet this never sounds like self-conscious 'interpretation'. Until now I've been swearing by Rubinstein, Ashkenazy and Alexandre Tharaud in the Waltzes. Not any more - the top spot is occupied solely by Stephen Hough, and I say that as someone who is not always convinced by Hough's playing.

Excellent 18 Oct 2011

It's a shame that Chopin's waltzes are often overlooked by pianists seeking to record Chopin's music, so it's good to see the issue being addressed here. An excellent CD which I would highly recommend. A valuable addition to anyone's CD collection.
