After her 2008 Chopin/EMI release, it's no surprise at all that Fliter's 2009 traversal of the Waltzes tenaciously establishes her as a pianist whose perception, individuality and consummate artistry are to be reckoned with, especially in a repertoire replete as it is with available recordings and ardent admirers. Favorite performances may seem now to somehow pale by comparison, and for a new artist this is no small measure of accomplishment. As Fliter boldly rings in the opening notes of Op. 18, one is more than transfixed by the frisson of what feels like live music-making--- exuberant, intense, emotional--- and by the innate awareness that these "dances of the heart" will, under her hands, become a breathtaking reality. The wistful, melancholic waltzes irrefutably confirm this initial impression with their haunting, world-weary nostalgia--- so clearly brimming with profoundly lyrical resignation--- transmuted by Fliter into pieces of astonishing depth and humanity. Her unaffected instinct for and understanding of this music extends to the simplest pieces, as well, continuing such a natural and delicately nuanced ebb and flow that the works become utterly irresistible.

The inclusion of the somewhat spurious twentieth waltz, a splendidly enchanting addition to the canon (first recorded by Garrick Ohlsson in 1996 on Arabesque), adds yet another reason to herald this new CD.

Throughout, Fliter's potential is uncompromised, her mastery admirable. All her ear-tickling "eccentricities," curious hesitations and pauses, clarity of voicing, and her surprising use of various manuscript variants make for an exceptional Chopin pianist--- and very few of same have been intrepid enough to peer as deeply into the Waltzes as Fliter does, nor to bring to them such an entirely new and transcendental meaning so very far removed from the salon.

Anyone essaying a new recording of these extremely well-known pieces has to contend with a formidable array from earlier eras. More than half of the Waltzes are pianistic and compositional masterpieces and have been the calling cards of generations of great pianists.

Pre-eminent amongst those who have recorded some, or all, of these works are Moriz Rosenthal, Ignaz Friedman, Alfred Cortot, Dinu Lipatti, Artur Rubinstein and Stefan Askenase.

The fact that Ingrid Fliter can be spoken of in the same breath as these legendary performers is some measure of the excellence of this CD. When you also consider her relative youth (35 years) and her newness to the recording studio, it is even more remarkable that she should produce performances of such maturity, style and musical imagination. She has every pianistic attribute needed for this repertoire : highly finished technique, complete command of touch and dynamics, wonderful rhythm and phrasing, beautifully judged rubato and a natural way of "breathing" the music at the keyboard.

More than that, she brings a new insight into their interpretation - making them seem freshly minted: making the familiar unfamiliar, so that you eagerly await each note and phrase and are never disappointed. She is an ardent advocate for Chopin's genius in these and other works that she has recorded, and I can well imagine him looking down from Heaven and saying "Yes, THAT is how I should like them to be played."

Five stars are inadequate to reflect the excellence of this piano recording which will surely take its place amongst the very best ever committed to disc.

Chopins's waltzes are perennial favourites with their delightful and playful patterns of melody and rhythm. Many are very popular pieces that are often heard in ones and twos at recitals and concerts, and some are familiar from their use as TV and radio themes and in advertising. However, they are not often heard as a collection, so this CD is welcome for that reason. The pianist (an Argentine who moved to Europe in the 1990s) is already a renowned Chopin specialist, having won the silver medal at the Frederic Chopin Competition at Warsaw in 2000, and she has previously issued several CDs devoted to the composer.

These performances are classy and very good - the sound is clean and clear, there is expression and rhythm and the lilting slower pieces in particular are a delight. My only (slight) criticism is that sometimes I wish for a bit more 'bite' in the faster works.

OK, so some of the waltzes are very familiar, perhaps too familiar, but they are never hackneyed - tunes such as these stand repeated listening. Who can ever tire of the Minute Waltz? This CD is an excellent buy, not only for those wanting the complete collection of Chopin waltzes for its own sake, but also for anyone who wants a selection of wonderful tunes to brighten their day. Recommended.

Once again, I am indebted to Amazon for bringing the delightful Ingrid Fliter to my attention via my "recommendations". Although I had not particularly been a fan of classical piano music previously, having listened to the mp3 samples and also viewing a number of videos on Ingrid's website, I was amazed by her fantastic performances; she really makes the piano "sing" - so to speak! This lovely lady is obviously extremely passionate about the music she plays (not to mention the composers themselves) and it shows in the feeling and emotion she puts into her impeccable performances.

Through artistes like this, Chopin's music will live forever. I was so taken by this that I immediately placed an order for the album and I am thoroughly delighted with it. It is no wonder that Ingrid is so highly rated and she certainly deserves every success. Naturally, I am now smitten and I hope there will be many more recordings to follow.
