5.0 out of 5 stars Katsaris' Best Chopin Recording! 10 Dec 2007
By Scriabinmahler TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This recording of Chopin Ballades & Scherzos won best award for instrumental music in Japan when it was first released by Teldec. Katsaris plays each piece with his trademark dare-devil virtuosity and unusal degrees of emotional intensity. 1st Ballade is probably the most gripping performance of the work on record. Scherzos are equally brilliantly played. Highly recommendable alongside Rubinstein's amazing RCA Living Stereo version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Titanic Rendition! 30 Nov 2011
By Scriabinmahler TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I've bought the originally released CD of this famous recording by Katsaris, when it won many awards in France, Germany and Japan in 90s, and it still remains as one of the most intensely felt and powerful performances of Ballades & Scherzos in modern era. Pletnev's Carnegie Hall performance of Scherzos comes close to it, but only Richter's performances match Katsaris' account in its Titanic Lisztian rendition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music: inspiring performances 19 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD because I love the B Flat Minor Scherzo. I first heard a fellow student play it about 30 years ago and have loved it ever since.
But the whole CD is terrific. I discovered that I was familiar with one other Scherzo and 2 of the Ballades. Katsaris plays sensitively and brings out the beauty of the music.
Highly Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eastern track info 8 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
The music on this CD is lovely, especially the famous Ballade No 1. I was disappointed, however, that the track info shown when it's played on my computer is all in some Far-Eastern script. I've had to rip it onto my hard drive then retype all the tracks manually. If you're willing to put up with that hassle, it is good value for money, and once you shut your eyes it should work its magic whatever language is showing on your screen.
