Product Description

From the moment I heard demos, I knew this was a special batch of songs, nestled in the sweet spot between wistfulness and joy, explains Thomas Bartlett, who oversaw Bell X1's sixth album alongside the National's longtime producer (Peter Katis). The challenge was in making the songs rich and robust without losing the fragility and intimacy that made them so striking in the first place. The solution was actually quite simple: Rather than rely on malevolent noise makers and malfunctioning computers like Bell X1 did on their last couple LPs, Chop Chop shaves their melancholic sound sculpted by frontman Paul Noonan, bassist Dominic Philips and multi-instrumentalist David Geraghty down to nothing but reverb-trailed riffs, wildly expressive vocals and delicately layered rhythms. That way everything at least feels effortless, whether it's the hypnotist hooks of Starlings Over Brighton Pier, the brain-burrowing torch balladry of Careful What You Wish For, or the heart-sinking apocalypse now narrative that is The End Is Nigh.

I'm not sure why this latest slice of brilliance makes me feel like a character in a Graham Greene novel but it does. I heard the lads play 'The End is Nigh' on Phantom during the week; what a record. Unlike most groups who suffer a daliance with the once mighty major labels, Bell X1 have gone from strength to strength after the nonsense fades. People who bought this have also bought Blue Lights on the Runway and Field Recordings (can't beat the ESB ad nostalgia.)

Bell X1 are in their 14th year now as a band, and onto this sixth album, Chop Chop. This is a really good album, with some great songs. It's very simple at times, and it's an approach that really pays off.

There's a variety of different sounds on the album. A good example of this contrast is the neighbouring tracks 'Diorama', and then 'I Will Follow You'. 'Diorama' is almost a mournful ballad with it's introspectively gentle vocals and piano chords. Whereas 'I Will Follow You' is a much higher tempo guitar driven song, with a simple and very effective chorus. Also, I love the muted brass in the background of this track, it really just adds that little je ne sais quoi.

My favourite track is 'Drive-By Summer', which starts with a lovely bassline that straddles at least one octave. The melody is carried so gently by Noonan's voice, something which really makes some of these tracks so great.

In all, this is a decent album from a good band, one that I would like to see live. If you're a fan of their other albums, or any kind of alternative rock then this is a really good album. I would recommend giving it a listen.

Ok, perhaps I'm biased as I'm a massive BellX1 fan, but this their fifth hit album (sixth produced) is brilliant, as to be expected. The lads have an eclectic sound with cool rifts and blended harmonies. BellX1 are fantastic, live. Do try to see them gig, but for now, get this album, chop chop!

This Band is Aging Beautifully 9 July 2013

An incredible album! If you look at my Top 11 albums of 2011, you'll see that I ranked their last album "Bloodless Coup" at number 3 on that list. "Chop Chop" tops that album in every way. In terms of number of songs, it's a very short album, with only 9, but the songs carry more weight than any of their other albums. They find themselves honing their songwriting skills here. Gone are the funky beats and the sometimes overuse of programming that could occasionally salvage a less than stellar song. The crux of most of these songs is built around a piano, allowing Paul Noonan's vocals to be front and center for the entire album. There is not one bad song on this album and it's been endlessly playing on my iPod since I got it. I'm not sure I'll listen to a better album this year. "She cries, at motorcades, she cries."

Moody. Atmospheric. Gorgeous vocals and music. Love this album. Not at all what you'd expect to follow up Bloodless Coup. If you got their Field Recordings the tempo is more in line with that but still not the sound. They have gone down another path full of wonder, sadness, joy, hope, wit, and promise. The title of my review says it all, just lovely.
Another Bell X1 Masterpiece... 3 Sept. 2013

Bell X1 has to be one of the finest bands around that hardly anyone in America has ever heard of. I have played this cd several times now and I cannot get enough of it. The first three songs, "Starlights Over Brighton Pier," "A Thousand Little Downers," and "Careful What You Wish For" are absolutely amazing. I cannot get enough of these songs. The other songs excluding the final song are very well written and I enjoy them also. Then, the final song "The End Is Nigh" left me wanting more. Which brings me to the only thing bad about this cd was the fact that it only has nine songs. But even with that said, anyone who knows about Bell X1 and enjoys their previous music must get this CD. Chop Chop may lack in total number of songs but is full of quality music that will keep me coming back for more.

Loved this band since I first heard them on the radio in Ireland 10 years ago. This album doesn't disappoint. Especially love track 2; beautiful song with lots of layers.

Full disclosure, I love Bell X1 and have all of their albums. The 1st 2 songs on this sound like some of their songs on previous albums (the 2nd song seems to have the exact same piano riff as a previous song), so was a little disappointed in those. But I like the other songs, so giving this 4 stars. I love that their music doesn't sound like any other artists, plus the lyrics are good and some have such a twisted slant that it sometimes makes me laugh! I'd love to be in the same room with these guys, as I bet they're a lot of fun. They say some things that all of us think and makes it so poignant (or funny). Very unique band, and I love them.
