Who should read this book? In short, anyone who wants to use solar photovoltaic (PV) to generate electricity and needs to know the pros and cons before talking to a professional PV installer. It is not intended as a comprehensive technical manual for designers and installers, although those considering installation as a business will find it a useful quick introduction to the subject. It doesn't cover design and installation issues exhaustively, but does give you the knowledge to feel confident enough to engage an installer. It also helps you understand how feed-in tariff incentives could make your investment in a solar PV system more than pay for itself. Working out what you want from solar PV and what solar PV can give you requires a logical step-by-step approach. Going into it without a thorough understanding of your own requirements and the limitations and potential of solar power could cost a great deal of money. Choosing Solar Electricity shows you how to assess your solar resource to see whether or not your site is suitable for solar. It then goes on to describe the various technological options, financial considerations and maintenance issues associated with solar PV. Finishes with a section of useful case studies describing existing PV systems, a glossary of terms and a directory of useful contacts.

"Goss has produced a publication that is perfect for dipping in and out of as a solar PV project progresses." -- Greenbuild News, April 13, 2010
From the Publisher
Choosing Solar Electricity is the first book on the market to help customers take advantage of new government backed feed-in tariffs that will make solar power affordable for tens of thousands of people.
Hugely informative book covering all aspects of solar electricity from working out solar resource in specific locations to issues such as shading, planning permission and building regulations, and how to choose a PV installer. The subject is covered in great detail but in a very easy-to-read manner, with clearly marked technical sections for additional detail if needed. As well as covering all aspects of solar electricity the book also gives a brief introduction to the whole concept of energy and power and gives a useful overview of other renewable technologies. Released at a very opportune time, the book covers the new Feed in Tariff for electricity generation, introduced in April 2010 and enables the reader to gauge the financial implications of this and the effect on payback times and potential income from investing in solar PV. It is certainly the most comprehensive and up-to-date publication I have read on the subject and wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anyone considering installing, or specifying this technology or for educational purposes.
I recently purchased from CAT a copy of "Choosing Solar Electricity" by Brian Goss. This proved to be the most practical, down-to-earth, detailed, up-to-date (embracing financial changes effective from April 2010), informative and comprehensible instruction manual I have ever read on any subject. A massive help in understanding and selecting a PV system.
Choosing Solar Electricity is the most comprehensive book on the market for those new to solar. It is the perfect introduction. It breaks down all the elements of solar provision into easily digestible sections that are not over complicated. It has become a bible for myself and my team
