More About the Author

Pigs and smallholding have been my passion for the past 12 years. I started off by breeding Gloucester Old Spots, but then moved onto Oxford Sandy and Blacks, Large Blacks and Tamworths. Along with my husband I ran the Bidgiemire Pig Co for 9 years before taking a back seat to concentrate on my fledgling journalistic career. I believe very strongly in urban pig keeping and many of our customers are people who have a large garden and live in a suburban area. I have appeared on tv and radio in connection with keeping pigs including Sky, BBC and ITV as well as appearing on programmes abroad. I now organise pig features for agricultural shows as well as speaking at relevent events including the very first Scottish Smallholder show. My articles can be found in Farmers Guardian, HomeFarmer, Smallholder Magazine, Practical Pigs as well as local and national newspapers. I have recently bought over from Holland the very first Meishan breed of pigs to be seen in the country for over 25 years. My intention is to breed and establish a british herd.

Brilliant book for anyone considering keeping pigs or just interested in them as it is an easy read and full of colour plates which makes it a delight to pick up and browse through.Bought as a present for someone who has kept pigs before and is just about to start again, so not just aimed at the first timer. The book disappeared numerous times during the day as none piggy people picked it up to read.

I reccommend this book for anyone starting out in pig keeping- including keeping as pets. This is a lovely book, easy to read and with lots of lovely photographs throughout. It includes a chapter on what you need to purchase before buying your pigs and a section on pig health. All the pig breeds are included, especially the rare breeds.

An overall informative guide to anyone wanting to set up and keep pigs. Probably not the 'complete handbook' but a good start none the same.

I bought this book and found it very interesting, easy to read and informative. There are plenty of pictures which help to visualise what you'll need to do before getting the pigs and how it will go. The breed section is especially good. Very good pictures and desctiption of the pigs' needs - hardy, outdoor, indoor, also temperament. I keep going back to the breeds section. Good book. Worth buying.
