Product Description

Review

'This book is a great read and I'll certainly keep it on my shelf. It put my mind at rest by quitting those niggling queries I had about contraception and helped me to be proactive about choosing a method for me.' Davina McCall, TV presenter 'This clear and practical book separates fact from fiction and is packed full of everything the reader needs to know. We can always trust FPA for good sense and information on contraception.' Deidre Sanders, Agony aunt for The Sun 'I'm so delighted that there is finally a comprehensive guide to contraception. Far too often, women spend more time choosing an outfit than choosing their method of contraception. It's important to know what's available so that you can make the right choice for you. That way you can ask for what you want rather than making do with what you're given.' Dr David Bull, TV doctor

Product Description

This easy to read guide enables women to take control of their reproductive lives by helping them to choose the very best method of contraception available. The book is relevant to women regardless of their life situation: either not wanting to become pregnant, considering getting pregnant in the future, having just had a baby, or approaching the menopause. Women will find Choose what you use fundamental to making their individual contraceptive choice. In turn, this choice is likely to greatly improve their self-esteem, health, wellbeing and relationships. This exceptional consumer book is written by FPA, the UK's most trusted authority on contraception. Unlike standard contraceptive books, the reader doesn't need a medical background to benefit from it. Choose what you use highlights crucial, yet frequently overlooked, lifestyle factors affecting women's choice of contraception. Medical and practical issues relating to each of the 15 methods [caps, combined pill, contraceptive implants, contraceptive injections, contraceptive patch, diaphragms, female condom, progestogen only pill (POP), hormone releasing intrauterine system (IUS), intrauterine device (IUD), male condoms, natural family planning, female sterilisation, male sterilisation and vaginal ring]with the pros and cons are covered. Also, myth busting sections appear throughout and other need-to-know subjects such as pregnancy choices, safer sex and emergency contraception are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and informative., 16 May 2010

This review is from: Choose What You Use: The FPA Essential Guide to Contraception (Paperback)
This is an amazing book which really informs the reader on all of the facts required to make an informed choice about contraception. Refreshingly it does not resort to the poor cartoon imagery which is present is so many books of this genre. The layout is effective and easy to read with just the right amount of information presented in each section. Even if you are happy with your own choice of contraception this is an invaluable reference which may offer you an opportunity to reflect on your current method and consider its merits alongside those of other methods. As you would expect from the fpa no opinion is offered as to the rights and wrongs of any particular method, merely a reassurance that the right choice for you is simply that - your choice. This is an essential book for parents to have on their bookshelves, as teenagers - male and female - would certainly appreciate the honesty and information contained in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book Review, 2 Aug 2010
By
This review is from: Choose What You Use: The FPA Essential Guide to Contraception (Paperback)
I bought it as a resource for discussion with patients. It is clear and concise regarding contraception choices.
As a resource for a health professional, it is of limited value, as far as contraindications, interactions are concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Broad and non bias, 14 Jun 2010
This review is from: Choose What You Use: The FPA Essential Guide to Contraception (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone wishing to consider their contraceptive options and an interesting read for those that aren't. It clearly explains all the options that are currently available - including a few I had not heard of! The book is concise and to the point and includes some useful basic biology. It weighs up the pro and cons as well as dismissing commonly held myths at the same time.

Unlike other sources (including some health professionals), the book presents the options in a non bias way. For those who like myself, cannot use hormonal contraceptive methods, it provides information on all the alternatives, along with the practical details of what's involved.

Generally a great book and a definite must have for anyone trying to find a method or methods that work for them.
