Product Description

I Choose Us draws from the Scriptures, credible research, and the Louis' life experiences to build a strong case for the importance of having a healthy, vibrant marriage. It takes readers through the different phases of marriage and gives practical biblical advice about how to build Love Connection by showing real love and respect to our spouses. With the help of questionnaires, this books also gives valuable insights into unhealthy thinking patterns, called lifetraps (schemas). Rather than relying on ineffective communication and behaviour that invariably leads to the Vortex of Conflict Escalation, I Choose Us helps couples break harmful cycles, and avoid hurtful coping styles as they practice vulnerability and forgiveness.

A great book for understanding yourself and your partner whether your relationship is going well or needing help 30 Jun 2011
By Gorge - Published on Amazon.com
When I was first introduced to this book, I was a little sceptical (Another marriage book? What's new??) but I am SO glad I bought it and read it. If your marriage is going fine, you will feel renewed confidence about its health. If it's not going so fine, you will find lots of answers about why things aren't going so well and how to make things better. You will find out why you and your partner feel and behave about certain things and how that's related to your childhood experiences, and what choices you can make about your behaviour to prevent conflicts from escalating, and to bring your marriage to a healthy and happy place.

There are questionaires that help you assess where you stand, and lots of references for further reading. I gained so much out of it I am going on to buy some of the other books referred to in this book. Highly recommended. Very readable and well organised and illustrated, and backed by lots of research. One long chapter is based on research by Dr Jeffrey Young on schema therapy, but if I hadn't read this book I wouldn't have known about schemas. And even if you have read Dr Jeffrey Young's book "Reinventing Your Life", you will still do well to buy this book because there are additional schemas that were not included in Dr Young's book which was written in the 1990s. One of the authors was trained by Dr Young.

There are scripture references but it is not at all preachy, so even if you are not a Christian, you can still read the book without the Scripture references and you will still get a lot out of it.

Do yourself and your loved ones a favour - buy it and read it
Insightfull, helpful, and very well written 24 July 2011
By Katherine A. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
My wife and I loved this book. We found it very helpful. It offered insights into why we behave the way we do and how to break the cycle. It has fostered great communication as we talk about what we are learning. I give this my highest recommendation. This is about Schema or Life Traps. These are areas where we have an altered view of reality. For example the viewpoint of no one will love me if they know the real me is a lifetrap. When we are vulnerable people are drawn to us is the truth. All I can say is get this book and go through it with your spouse. In other words by 2 copies.

PS. I am not related to, nor do I know the author.
