Product Description

Review

A modern allegory, whimsy, moral-laden but laughable, as young John Midas, gluttonous, selfish, finds himself in a mysterious old shop. From an initial taste of chocolate a series of horrifying experiences follow. His orange juice turns to chocolate. His gloves become edible. His pencil becomes a chocolate stick during a math test, his trumpet turns to chocolate during orchestra practice - and he cannot quench his unbearable thirst. Finally- yes, this would happen- he kisses his mother and she turns to chocolate, too. A hasty trip back to the shop for a lesson in consideration and instructions on how to repair the damage finally brings salutary results. The author's tricks with alliteration, funny names and recognizable childhood experiences save this from being preachy. (Kirkus Reviews) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Magic Touch 22 Aug 2002
Format:Paperback
This enchanted story about John will have the taste buds going in reading for every child. John is a chocoholic and wants nothing more than chocolate but when suddenly everything he touches becomes chocolate he soon finds himself not quite the fan he thought he was. As John's life becomes interrupted by his glove and skipping rope turning to chocolate and his inability to do his maths test as his pencil turns to, yes you got its, chocolate, the humour of this book will have children giggling all the way through.

Following John as he encounters chocolate syrup and milkshakes, as well as chocolate on its own allows the children to taste and visualise what is happening to the main character in the book. With the magical twist at the end all children (and adults) will want to read the book again and again. This is a tasty little book which you can really get your teeth into.

Chocolates galore 16 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
A librarian read this book to us, up to the part where John gets the box of chocolate and slips it into his mouth. I just had to get the book to see what happened next especially as you could tell it was no ordinary chocolate in such a big box.I reserved the book, and had to wait six months maybe more until the book came to our library. It really is a chocolatey book. Children will love it.

A great laugh! 12 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
Everyone loves chocolate, don't they? But too much is bad for you. John does not care; he just loves sweets. His mum warns him, his dad warns him but it does not have any effect at all. John finds a very unusual but special coin and he buys a box of chocolates (or so he thinks) but he is tricked...

This book is a great story. It is funny, a bit scary, thrilling - overall very good! It is great for 7 - 11 year olds who like exciting stories because it is a really big adventure!
I would rate this book 6/ 10. I have only one criticism and here it is: the story line is just like another story about a greedy king and the only difference really is that in `The Chocolate Touch' it is chocolate but in `King Midas and his golden touch' it is gold. The titles are even similar! Many of the vents are alike and both stories have the same moral at the end - greediness will bring sadness and a balance of things are good for you. Patrick Skene Catling, the author of this book, I don't think asked the author of `King Midas' for the ideas. But who knows?
