5.0 out of 5 stars A balanced, informative, compassionate and attractive work., 25 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Weil and Rosen have written a no-nonsense guide to drugs which will be of particular use for parents and their kids. In my experience many young people are curious about and likely to experiment with drugs - if they are clearly educated about the effects and possible risks so much the better. Drug use is an emotive issue: I think this book's sane discussion is what is needed. The authors recognise that politics and policy as an intergral part of the issue, and with the 'war on drugs' obviously not working, the authors' willingness to grapple with it is admirable. Tabacco and alcohol cause much individual and social harm; altough they act as 'drugs' they are usually not considered as such. These substances - as with the illegal ones - can be used either responsibly or foolishly. With many fascinating images, useful notes and bibliography this is a book which I wholeheartedly recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Biased and accuracy mixed with inaccuracies, 21 Jan 1999
By A Customer
There are a number of statements in this book about certain drugs being safe to use under certain circumstances. While this is true for some people under certain circumstances, the authors left out a major element in defining "safe use". They left out the human element.

Some people and certain drugs should not be mixed. In the majority of cases there is no way to tell ahead of time who these people are and which drugs they should avoid. Once they start, for many of these people there is no going back. It becomes a lifelong battle of addiction and chemical dependency. This is particularly true of cocaine, heroin, other opiates, alcohol, and certain other depressants.

The author's comments on legalization and their anti-government sentiment got too much in the way. The politics should have been left out of it, it wiped out their credibility for me.

On the one hand the government is putting out inaccurate info to justify their position, but on the other hand so is this book. 180 degrees from sick is still sick.

It's unfortunate the author's "straight talk" wasn't. This book will do harm to people looking for accurate guidance and information on safe drug use.
