The smooth velvety,'chocolatey' voice of Ms.Boykin is a truly fantastic combination with the spicey jazzy tunes on this set. This really is a great example of traditional jazz melding with some modern jazz/samba/blues/funk and soul rhythmns. From the cool vibes of the opening 'Be My Lover' you are in for a musical journey. The word 'cool' is appropriate in the context of the music on offer on this set.A cheesey word maybe, but very descriptive of the atmosphere of the music which has a bit of a Miles Davis feel in places.Without rambling on about every track I will save time by stating they are all listenable with no need to skip tracks at all.
If you like modern jazz with some strong jazz vocals you will enjoy this set.A lot of acoustic instuments feature on this CD but they are backed with some subtle electronic wizadry which cleverly retains a pure jazz feeling throughout. The diversity of the musical flavourings here is really quite remarkable as is the quality of the musicianship displayed. This is GREAT and demands a Grammy!

Beautiful voice, superb music, far from being dull- every song is different. One of my best purchases ever. I can't wait for the next one!

I had really high (possibly unrealistic) expectations of this album. The albums that this ladies voice graces are exceptional, as indeed are her aptly described 'chocolate and chilli' tones. Bahama Soul Club especially, but also Club Des Belugas have records that are uplifted by Brenda Boykin's rich soul-jazz voice. I therefore came to this hoping and expecting the same high standards. Under other circumstances I would perhaps say this was better, but given the incredibly high quality of those records, this somehow falls a little flat. The one stand out is Hard Swing Travelling Man which is brilliant and arguably worth the price of admission alone, but the rest was, to be blunt, slightly forgettable. Good, but given the choices, slightly disappointing.
