Book Description

21 May 1998

Chloe Cadwaller is in a quandary. Her beloved godmother has just died and left Chloe a letter instructing her to give up her job (lousy) and her boyfriend (never good enough for you) to travel the four countries of the United Kingdom during the four seasons of the year. Heavens. How can Chloe deny a godmother's last wish?

Off she goes, with a tremor of doubt and a letter marked Wales, with her friends Mr and Mrs Andrews and an uncertain future, to a farm deep in the Brecons where she finds a selection of animals in deteriorating states of health and the best-looking man she's ever laid eyes on.

As subsequent seasons unfold, so too does Jocelyn's mission to teach her goddaughter to stand on her own two feet, celebrate the beauty of Britain and discover love, lust, life (and a man for each season).

Join Chloe on the adventure of a lifetime - involving sex, sculpture, ice-cream, Edinburgh, egg sandwiches and a potter named William - in the warm and witty novel of one girl's quest for a place to call home.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's nobody quite like Freya! 12 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I've read every one of Freya North's books and must say that nobody can relax and excite the mind quite like her. She is the first author I've read who actually talks to her characters directly and encourages them to divulge their inner most feelings to us. And it's great fun to read.

Chloe has to be my number one book. What a wonderful idea to have a heroine give up her dreadful job and appalling boyfriend and discover both herself and the four countries of the UK during the four seasons. Haven't we all wanted to do that at one time or other?

Freya North has a great eye for detail, whether describing a kiss, the ocean or pieces of polythene snagged in a tree - the world is a wondrous place, and when you finish one of her books it really is like losing a friend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Freya's Girls 18 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Chloe is another one of Freya North's female characters who discovers herself through travel and adventure. The problem with all of Freya's girls' is that Freya has to come along. The authors style of interrupting the flow of action with her own personal voice and observations can only be done by a true master without irritating, and as heavily as Ms North leans on Austin's stlye and perky wit, she just hasn't the talent t seem to pull it off successfully. Chloe is a whole lot more likeable that Sally, and being British myself, I enjoyed the tour of the United Kingdom, but Ms Norths female characters are too petty, and stupid to be anything less than a source of constant irritation. She's trying for sexy girl power, the sex IS pretty powerful, but Freya's girls, like Ms North as a writer, are in need of a good slap. Ms North, can write, there's no doubt about it, but I can't help wishing she'd change her stlye, simplify the lines of the novels and for God's sake let the characters play out their dramas without her smart alec remarks.

I'm reading Freya North's books from new to old having started with Polly. But I have to say that yet again Chloe was a book that I could not put down. Freya North takes you from a 'dismal London', to Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and back to England. What a 'tour-guide' Chloe is and what a great way to spend a year 'finding yourself' and learning more about that very special person in your life. I liked the way in which Chloe 'discussed' everything with Mr & Mrs Andrews - but wasn't too sure about the way in which they were depicted as having a life (which I'm sure thay did - way back then). Still a good part of the stories, wonderful characters once again. I'm reading Sally now and expecting that to be just as good if not better. Well Done Freya for entertaining your readers brilliantly, when's the next one out?
