3.0 out of 5 stars Chip Carving Techniques and Patterns 15 Oct 2003
By A Customer
The book starts out well with advice on choosing and using tools as well as sharpening them and it also suggests the best woods to use. However, there are a lot of photographs of beautifully carved examples but few diagrams showing how they could be recreated. There is a good section on creating rosettes and on on letters and numbers. As this book is aimed at the complete beginner, it ought to have included far more plans of patterns which the reader could copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best place to start. 1 Feb 1999
By A Customer - Published on
I learned to chip carve from reading this book. The patterns and work shown are somewhat simple and are easily attainable. Barton's descriptions and explainations are clear and if you follow what he does, it inspires enough confidence to continue.

A good basic book about chip carving. Covers selection of wood, tools and their maintenance, technique, and a brief history of chip carving. Also includes a variety of patterns.

Wayne has presented a very fine book. Maybe a bit too technical for my chip carving ability, but a good start.
