It is an extremely good book. Obviously the vocabulary given is not that vast(how would you imagine that?), however, it does give you all speech patterns that you will need, so that you could build on it. This book series (1-4) gives a Mandarin beginner strong foundations in the language (if all the activities are done and the audio disc is used)

I really enjoyed this book - and also volumes 1 to 3. The book and CD take you to a nice level at a reasonable pace. Like any language course there are other ways of doing things - but the style of this book suited me very well. This book is probably the best intermediate Chinese text that I have come across so far. I finished studying the book in about 5 months - though I regularly revise the chapters and listen again to the recordings. I am very disappointed that there is no volume 5 or 6 (and not likely to be for some time I am told). There is a need for a more advanced Chinese language text specifically aimed at English learners. The Beijing L. I. Practical Chinese series is very good as well, but you need a Chinese tutor to help you through it in my opinion. There is not much in English or pinyin apart from the vocabulary – it’s all in characters. Chinese in Steps is accessible to the average learner without too much help and it has English and pinyin to support the characters. I was a little annoyed with the introduction of new words in the listening comprehension exercises. This required me to search and look up vocabulary unnecessarily when I should have been listening. Despite this relatively minor gripe, the book (and indeed the whole series) is well worth buying.
