Book Description

Li Shangyin (813–858), courtesy name Yishan, was a Chinese poet of the late Tang Dynasty, born in Henei (now Qinyang, Henan). Along with Li He, he was much admired and "rediscovered" in the 20th century by the young Chinese writers for the imagist quality of his poems. He is particularly famous for his tantalizing "no title" poems. This book gives a brief introduction of Li Shangyin and collects 23 most symbolic poems of him.

The first part of the ebook appears to have been drawn from a Wikipedia page. The text is full of irrelevant hyperlinks to other Wikipedia pages. (A link, for example, for "alcoholic beverages"). There is no information about the nature of this particular translation or the translator. The title page, in fact, lists no publisher or translator. There is no information about the source of the original Chinese on which the translation is supposed to be based. The book does include Chinese characters. I cannot read these. In any case, there is no telling what sources were used for this material. The translation itself, wherever it comes from, is of no great merit. I recommend against purchasing this product, at least until the publisher, whoever it is, provides even the bare minimum of information about the publication.
