"Full of adventure."--School Library Journal

Product Description

During her lonely childhood in Shanghai, Adeline Yen Mah wrote adventure stories to escape from her terrible step-mother and cruel siblings. The characters she created often became more real to her than her own family. In Chinese Cinderella and the Secret Dragon Society, Adeline tells the story of Chinese Cinderella, a young girl who, after being thrown out of her home, has no choice but to go out and seek her own destiny. Soon she meets up with a group of children, all orphaned but each from a different background, who live with an old lady called Grandma Wu. Chinese Cinderella, or CC for short, decides her future after consulting an ancient book which helps to show her the way forward. And her choice takes her on a mission to save the lives of others. Based on a true-life incident during World War II. CC and the others bravely rescue a group of American pilots whose plane crashed after a bombing raid on Japan. Although her father is looking for her, CC knows that she can never go back to live with her cruel stepmother, and now there is no turning back.

This book is truly, truly moving. It is the only book which has ever made me cry and for that it deserves merit. If you have not yet read this book I suggest that you read the first book before you read it, which is called Chinese Cinderella.

The Secret Dragon Society begins when Adeline is chucked out of her home and left to feign for herself. Along her journey, she meets a group of orphaned children under the care of Grandma Wu. She joins the group and there, finds an ancient book which touches her heart. From there, her and her new friends set out to save injured pilots in the second world war. I will not tell you any more because I do not want to spoil the book!

I strongly recommend that you read it.

I have never read a story like this before this is a unique novel. I was really amazed when I read this book its emotional and gripping. You may not get what I'm saying but if you read the book you will see what I mean. It has a sense of adventure and true character it also is losely based on Adeline Yen Mah(The Author). It is sad but it needs to be to be to make the story work. I think anyone who enjoys reading and is 9 and above should enjoy this book. There is another book by Adeline Yen Mah Chinese Cinderella if the name rings a bell you would enjoy this one. Please note you don't have to read the first novel before you read this one. I think personally if you are thinking of buying it you should give it a try. I'm not going to reveal the plot to you but when C.C gets thrown out of her fathers house and takes refuge with grandma Wu, in the martial arts academy, things begin to happen!! A must read book.

After being thrown out of her home by her evil step mother Ye Xian or CC (her English name)is stranded on the dangerous streets of Shanghai, but after meeting three acrobat boys performing in the park she is invited to come and be part of the Martial Arts Academy with Grandma Wu and the boys. Here she becomes part of a whole new family making friends and learning Kung Fu. One day they set off for a secret mission that changes they're lives forever.

Not having read the first book(Chinese Cinderella, The Secret Story Of An Unwanted daughter)I caught up quite quickly on the story line of CC and her earlier life that is explained in the previous book. The danger of CC's new life does not put her off learning Martial Arts with Grandma Wu and the boys. This book takes the reader through gripping tales of danger, friendship and loyalty.
I confess I shed a tear or two during this book so I suggest you keep a box of tissues next to you if you are a emotional person.
