If you are serious about learning Chinese characters then you will not find a better book than this. It is not a grammar book and so you will not learn basic sentences or conversations. It is simply a well thought out memorizing method for learning over 2000 of the most frequently occurring (simplified) Chinese characters.
Some of the features are:
* Structured from simple to more complex characters
* Gradual build up of character components
* A powerful memory association technique (stories) is the central feature
* Excellent backtracking system for almost instant retrieval of previous facts
* On-line resource has characters in book order suitable for use with the free Anki software
The combination of the highly structured text presentation tied into the 'flash card' Anki computer learning system creates a perfect learning environment which will lead to successful character learning. With one or two hours a day for 6-8 months you will know these characters inside out.
I cannot recommend this book (and it's on-line resources) highly enough. Congratulations to the author on managing to capture on paper such an effective method.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised. 16 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
Reasonably priced considering how much useful information there is held in this book. Not only does it assist you to memorise over 2178 characters but it importantly includes by rank the 2000 most popular characters in the language.

Statistically this means that after completing your study you will be able to understand 96.5 % of any modern Chinese text and will be able in many cases to piece together the intuitive meanings of compound words. The author has made the venture doable and even enjoyable.

The characters themselves are in large print and are clearly and methodically presented with not only the English meaning but with also with their pinyin pronunciation. There are various indices in the back of the book so that you can cross reference either from the pinyin or the English meaning. The author presents memory stories/aids for all 2000+ characters and not just the first few hundred.

I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to memorise Chinese characters through brute force. This new approach has worked for me. Expect to cover a section a day of the 91 section book. This means learning 25 new characters a day with 60 minutes daily study leading to the completion of the book in just three months.I have tried covering the sections more quickly but have found it too much memory wise for my poor brain to take in.However you might do better. Anyway good luck in your study of the Chinese language.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best chinese book on the market! 17 July 2011
By Katey N
Format:Paperback
Ezchinesey is teaching me Chinese characters fast - it is the best book on Chinese I've ever bought. The great thing is that it ties in with some software called Ainki which I have on my Android phone and as a result I can reinforce the learning each day - I'm confident that I can learn to read a Chinese newspaper in around a year with this system. It is a highly pleasurable learning experience. I cannot recommend this system highly enough. Use it with the Ainki flashcard software and it is foolproof.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly suitable for non-geniuses... 15 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I have tried many tools for memorizing Chinese characters and have always come across the problem that I have had difficulties associating seemingly random words with random symbols. I see myself as somebody who is untalented at memorizing random facts, and therefore found this book extremely helpful. The author comes up with (sometimes random) stories about the characters to make a connection in your mind of its meaning. It may not be the classic or academically correct way of studying the characters, but for people (like me) who generally tend to have difficulties memorizing things, this guide is highly recommendable.
Plus, the stories are creative, entertaining and funny and it feels like reading an excerpt of a funny story at times which makes you laugh and allows you to associate pleasure with studying the characters. Ever since I started with this, I look forward to learning new characters every day. And this comes from someone who sits over his university books all day long and can't wait to stop reading. But learning the characters in such an entertaining way, is great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful 17 July 2011
By Holly
Format:Paperback
I've been using this book to start learning characters as I'm starting Chinese at university this year.
It's been really helpful to give me a bit of a head start and I will continue working my way through it when I'm at university.
There are also online aids to accompany the book which I think is a really good idea and helpful for practising what I've learnt!

My only complaint is that the book doesn't teach stroke order or how to write characters, but it definitely does what it says on the tin!

Extremely helpful book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn Chinese!

This book of characters is an excellent reference book for learning in a fun way. A little story accompanies each character, to help us to remember the shapes in each character. The book starts with easier ones, and gets harder as you learn more. The book has several sections, and you are intended to learn more every day.
Have fun!
