Until I married an American and went to live in Chincoteague for a while, I was totally ignorant of the existence of a peninsula
off the East Coast of America called the Delmarva Peninsula and had never heard of an island called Chincoteague..
I sort of thought New York ,Baltimore and Washington were the Eastern Coast! How wrong I was.
If the take a four/five hour drive from Washington across a large bridge a whole new world opens up to you. This is the first land that many people found when they sailed to America way back then and it is full of history.
Chincoteague is a little island off this peninsula likewise Assateague This book lists the original families, what they did and how they came to be there.
These pioneer people have my utmost respect as conditions in that area must have been very difficult...Mosquitos to name one horror come to mind!
If you have an interest in the history of America or just like travelling to new places I can recommend this book and also the novel
Chesapeake Bay which is almost an American classic.
If you are travelling to Chincoteague take time to explore the peninsula it's well worth it. Fresh fish, fresh clams, empty beaches,
Lots of wildlife and some excellent inexpensive hotels. Riding, swimming, boating, fishing, great history, pleasant people not forgetting .....Wallops Flight Facility and Rockets! (they won't let you in , :) , but there is a very informative NASA station there which IS open to the public)
From one little book step into a whole new world.......enjoy
