Review

While there are many excellent books on business in China, frequently the emphasis is on what can go wrong and how to avoid problems, few penetrate the issues incisively and offer a masterful fixes. This is a MUST-READ for anyone contemplating doing business in China or already doing business there. Easy to read, well-written and wide in scope, this is a very useful volume for any business library. Having this book is like having ten China business gurus on your board.

Tan Yinglan, Author, The Way Of The VC - Top Venture Capitalists On Your Board

“Reading the “Thanks” list in the Foreword to Jonathan Story's superb coverage of what it takes to do business in China, tells you a lot about the book. The list reads like a “who is who” of global companies and their chairmen, CEO's, general managers and senior executives operating in China.

Diving into the book itself is about as close to living the real thing as you can get, and the experience of the author and his sources will be of invaluable help to those already on the ground there, as well as these planning to do so.

Readers not only learn what to expect, and what to do (and not to do), but even more importantly they will come away from reading the book with a much deeper understanding of why things are evolving as they are. Buy it. Read it. Learn from it. Enjoy it. It will be one of the best investments in China that you can make.”

A good perspective on China business from an academic (some of others have been very confusing, to say the least).

In fact, you know this is a book by an academic from the academic question of "Should you be doing business in China?" Surely, following three decades of increasingly intensified activities from companies across the globe, doing business in China has already become a reality.

Without such activities, how could the Chinese economy have had the potential to overtake the US economy?

If you are looking for some deeper insights, The China Executive by Wei Wang, a truly bi-cultural practitioner in this area, is also worth considering.

For a while now I've been looking for a brief but comprehensive business primer on China. One that I can recommend to executives on our leadership expeditions in Asia. At last, something has emerged that fits the bill - Jonathan Story's "China Uncovered" [2010].

I've followed Story's work on Europe for over 25 years, always assured that it will be meaningful and well researched. An academic political scientist working in a leading business school, he has drawn on his 30 years of watching China emerge to produce this book and its precursor - China: The Race to Market [2003]. China: The Race to Market Both are valuable reads.

His latest book is comprehensive, but gets to the point - essential for time-pressed executives. It connects the Chinese economy, its politics and culture in a comprehensible framework, providing a big picture view, a holistic perspective of business in China.

This supports one of Story's key messages: understand China in the round and adopt a different mindset if you want to do business there. The book will certainly help you start this process.

The book's size is both a strength and a weakness. While you could easily read it twice on the plane from Paris to Beijing [and land much better prepared], there will inevitably be some topics that will not be covered in depth. The section on Confucius is thin, for example. Story acknowledges that breadth has to some extent sacrificed depth, but capturing the complexity of China in one volume inevitably means compromise.

But there's no compromise on relevance or practicality. In 200+ pages a business man or women new to China will find key topics covered: intellectual property, government relationships, joint ventures, communications, branding, negotiations, agents, local staffing...the list goes on. While not a "how-to" book, readers will find plenty to help them avoid the many traps that exist for the unwary in China.

A small footnote: given my professional interests I enjoyed the brief detour into the subject of learning organizations and how in China they must also be "patient organizations."
