Amazon.co.uk Review
James Bridges (Urban Cowboy, Bright Lights, Big City) directed this 1979 film that became a worldwide sensation when, just weeks after its release, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred. Jane Fonda (Klute, Julia) plays a television news reporter who is not taken very seriously until a routine story at the local nuclear power plant leads her to what may be a cover-up of epic proportions. She and her cameraman, played by Michael Douglas (Wall Street, American President), hook up with a whistleblower at the plant, played by Jack Lemmon (Save the Tiger, Missing). Together they try to uncover the dangers lurking beneath the nuclear reactor and avoid being silenced by the business interests behind the plant. Though topical, The China Syndrome (produced by Douglas) works on its own as a socially conscious thriller that entertains even as it spurs its audience to think. --Robert Lane

4.0 out of 5 stars 27 years old and still relevant, 6 Jul 2005
By Barton Keyes "barton keyes" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
A hairy Michael Douglas and thin-lipped, unwrinkled Jane Fonda complement each other perfectly in this pacy tale of corporate misbehaviour. A plausible story-line (with minimal logical disjunctures), workmanlike acting, tight editing and good camerawork all combine to produce a film that, despite the fact it was made over a quarter of a century ago, is as gripping to watch as any current corporate thriller.

The weak point is Jack Lemmon whose character, exhibiting all the usual physical tics that he uses to pass for characterisation,it is difficult to believe was supposedly a naval nuclear submarine commander prior to joining California Gas and Electric (the corporate villain). Bluntly his performance is weak until the final scenes when he puts in a storming display as the confused, disillusioned company man betrayed by the company.

The story line is tight and still relevant today. Only the fashions (and the cars)betray the film's age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Film, 8 Feb 2002
A surprising drama/thriller from director James Bridges. Produced by and starring Michael Douglas, but the main leads are a terrific Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon showing us once again how diverse he is. The film has some good stand-points on the power of the media and also the politics and morals of those big money makers. It's a must see, and has one of those climaxing endings which makes my heart thump every time I see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prophesy to Oscar win in one bound., 22 Feb 2001
Let's be honest, predicting a nuclear reactor problem and releasing it a couple of weks before the Three Mile Island disaster was never going to hurt this film was it?

That such acting lumiaries as Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Michael Douglas are the main players hardly sets it back either.

The quality of scripting, storytelling, production, etc. means nothing can stop this film from easily being a classic film in anybody's language.

If you've never seen this film, buy it, watch it and be impressed.

If you have seen it then you need no encouragement from me...
